Advice on Buying New Tyres 225/65R17 for Nissan X-trail

Hi, I need to buy some new tyres for my Nissan X-trail ST-L (current tyres are 225/65R17 102H) but have no clue what to get.

I am currently considering Cooper CS5 as they have a few good reviews, but to be completely honest I have no clue how to research about tyres as they all look the same to me. I mainly drive from home to work and around town plus highway (Brisbane to Toowoomba once/twice a month) and very little on unsurfaced roads, so I know I don't need an all-terrain tyre.

I'm hoping an Amex deal comes up for Bob Jane or another tyre supplier but it's not looking promising… I'm a Costco member so their tyres are also an option (but I live 2-3 hours away) and the current 3 for 4 deals with Bridgestone etc are other options.

The car currently has Goodyear Assurance Fuelmax from the previous owner.

Thanks in advance!

  • go to a new car wrecker buy a set of wheels (tyres and hubs) from a low KM car that suit your car.
you update your rims. and get "new" tyres.
I did that 18 months ago for my 2013 outlander. needed new 4 tyres. looking at ~$250 each.
bought complete set of tyres+hubs off a wrecker from a 2015 outlander that had done less than 5,000km.
    paid $540.
Sold the old rims and tyres on gumtree for $150. (to a bloke who wanted updated rims for his 2011 outlander)
had a complementary balance/alignment at my next service. - bam done.
new tyres + updated rims -$390.

Ecopia or Dueler (highway) would be suitable.

  • +1

Have similar vehicle. Just got kumho kl23 $508 fitted with an alignment from Kmart, price matched tyresales

  • I also have an X-trail. I was unhappy with the original tyres (Yokohama Geolandar) which just didn't give a lot of grip in damp or wet conditions.
This tyre test by Wheels (which is now a bit old) tested 225/65R17 tyres:

The overall winner was the Continental Conti Premium Contact 5.
I bought four through tyresales.com.au (fitted by ABC TyrePower 5 minutes from home).
    https://www.tyresales.com.au/tyre/size/225-65r17
While they were pricey (they are $186 each today at tyresales but appear to be regularly discounted - they were discounted when I bought), I am very happy with them so far (6 months in).

  • I have the same vehicle with the same rim size. I presently have Goodyear Optilife tyres. They seem to be quite good in terms of grip and wear, been on for about 15,000kms, but importantly, in my view, the road noise is good.

Don't go cheap on the tyres. The last set of tyres were something cheap and the road noise was distracting at highway speeds.

  • Bridgestone Turanza, Michellin Primacy or Latitude. As cheap as I am, I try to get quality tyres on sale rather than cheap low to average tyres because I use it for highway and city driving in all weather conditions.
