  • Great phone, if you're on the fence go for it. Great photos, the cpu is different from the usual samsung stuff but still plenty fast enough, and 128gig has plenty of room for me to not miss the lack of an SD Card slot. Just remember, no audio jack if that's your thing! It did come with an type-c to audio jack but I expect everyone to lose that within 5 seconds of opening the package.

Great phone specs, but Huawei are bad when it comes to releasing software updates.

Source: Jumped on the P9Plus bandwagon 2 years ago, yet, the last Android security patch was 1 March 2017.

      • The P20 Pro has pie coming out early jan in Aus, and has beta for some other regions already available.

Security updates have been twice monthly for most months, and I remember on launch there was a update weekly including a camera update about 1.5months in. It might change sure but for now, they've been great.

        • Based on previous experience on flagship phones from Huawei, the support/updates stop shortly after another flagship phone gets released. It's a sad fact :( Cause I really like the Huawei specs.

      • Software updates are critical to the useful life of a phone.
Huawei's failure on this front, like Oppo's, makes them a poor choice for anyone who wants to keep their phone for more than 12 moths.

        Who says Huawei is bad?

My 2 year old mate 9 has October security update and recently got gpu turbo.

        • +2

My Mate 10 Pro flagship has had 9 updates in 9 months. Currently sitting on a security patch that's only a month old…

It's also slated to get Pie this month or next month.

I have zero concerns with Huawei software support.

@BradH13: But people keep misinforming and spreading lies smh

I can't decide if I should get this, or wait a few months for the p30

Altho I wouldn't be surprised if the p30 costed upwards of 1300

    • I'm on the fence on this, most likely have come out around April/May next year the major thing would be 5G on it.

      • A phone won’t have 5g on it in May, no phone will.

    • Or Mate 20 Pro?

      • I'm looking at that but still wish it came down from $1600 :( Love it be around under $1200

        • Just pop by JB and ask them for a discount. I overheard 2 people getting around $1450 price mark.or they can give u like a $100 jb gift card if you pay full price.

      • contemplated(/ing) that too .. but im hoping the p30 pro will be priced less than the mate20 pro .. (I've no idea). I also kind of prefer the design of the p20 over the mate20 so hoping they retain some of the design features

plus im hesitant on getting the mate20 until they rectify (or sell out of) the green screen issue .

        • +2

The p30 will likely be priced similar to the S10, so expect it to be at least $1600.

          • @superroach: I have that feeling as well with the price, that why its the Mate 20 Pro or wait for the P30 Pro, I'm thinking of buying the Mate 20 pro.

          • @superroach: Argh.. You're probably right
            Gutted >_<

  • Hey guys - can I ask - is this phone better than the pixel?

I want a good camera phone and definitely on the fence about it -_- - cheers!

    • +1

I read this, this morning, hope it helps https://paidoo.com/2018/12/02/google-pixel-3-vs-huawei-mate-…

      • Thanks - camera is definitely up there…

Now to the battery life haha

        • Yeah I heard the Battery last longer on the P20 Pro then the Mate 20 Pro but 4200 battery a good size.

    • +1

      Pixel 2 or 3?

I know this camera is the best on DXO but it doesn't list the pixel 3

      https://www.dxomark.com/category/mobile-reviews/

    • I have the pixel 2 and I want to upgrade to this phone. Battery life on the pixel 2 is atrocious.

That's my main reason to upgrade: battery

    • +1

Both camera and battery are amazing.
The video stability is not very good, though. If you record movement videos, the P20 PRO is not the best option.

    • I would buy either this is the mate 20 (non pro)

Pixels are way too expensive and offer way too less

Just be aware this only has Bluetooth version 4.2 and not the far superior v5 that has been around a few years now re supporting much longer distances and more bandwidth.

    • I can confirm that I am having Bluetooth cut-out issues to my nura headphones, and web forums are littered with similar complaints. Other than that, it's a good phone in terms of battery life, camera etc.

    • Thx a lot. That stopped me from getting this one. 5.0 is a must to go with my Jabra 65t active, would last 2 hours longer than 4.2, in theory.

  • +1

Thanks for the post op… but what sort of giftcard i will be getting
    Thanks

  • Sorry some of this is blocked via my work internet - what is the $100 gift card for? Their own store or..?

    • No not for their store its a visa credit card to be spent where visa is accepted.

      • Thanks!! =)

  • Does any one what brands are good screen protectors for Huawei phones? As well any good cases?

    • +1

I have the UAG clear case. It's heavy but I feel that my phone is protected.

    • +1

The phone comes with a screen protector already applied and a clear soft case too. My screen protector has started to lift slightly on one edge but not enough to bother me.

Have been eyeing this phone for a while .Bonus gift card offer is until Dec 30 . Big question should I wait for 15% - 20 % off code until Christmas or pull the trigger .

    https://technoforce.com.au/index.php?route=product/product&p…

Tried yesterday to price beat OW with no luck . Lady who took the phone said we don’t price match grey import 😏

I'm hanging in there, it just sucks that Allphones chargers for this phone at $1098 and with the 20% works out the same as mobiciti even tho they are the same company wish they were straight with their prices as the 20% on mobileciti price from $998 would be like $798.40 :(

      Makes you go GRRRR

Was at JBhifi today, they have this phone for 998, so they may match.

        • JB also offer bonus gift card
JB HIFI commercial selling this phone at 889. IF they give JB gift card it will be 789.Will be less if you have access to 5% off JB gift cards via Ambassador or any other reward program.
          https://ibb.co/85HG2K7

          • @Abure Bauer: This deal is better because:

            • I assume the bonus gift card from JB is a JB Hifi giftcard rather than a visa prepaid card which isn't as good.
            • using the 10% off ebay sale (PYRO10) will still give you an invoice for the full amount ($998) which would be better for those making use of TRS
            • If you have access to the 5% off ebay cards from paypal digital you could also make use of the 5% off.
            • No Cashrewards from JB Hifi, 1% from ebay
  • Would we be able to claim TRS? As this phone worth more than 900. I think the limit is 900$ per person.

    • +1

      Yes u can.
900 is the limit for bringing goods back into the country. But once uve used it, it would have depreciated less than 900

Also if you're travelling with someone, your limit multiples. Ie 900 for 2 people is Max 1800 to bring back in

      • So if I buy the Mate 20 Pro at $1598 and come back in Australia 2 weeks later would that be ok, I travelling with a 2nd person, so can I still claim on tax for the phone with the tax department? thank you

        • +1

If you're traveling with a 2nd person, your combined pool becomes $900x2 (Source: https://www.abf.gov.au/entering-and-leaving-australia/can-yo…)

Regarding tax, best to speak to someone who is qualified to answer (im not)
but … when i buy my phone i intend on claiming the full amount for work purposes (I use my phone for work 99.99% of the time).

EDIT: just another note. Technically speaking to claim TRS it means you won't be bringing the item back into Australia. I read somewhere they are being a bit more strict on this and they may check you on your way back in to ensure you're not bringing the item back in. However in my limited experience, i've never seen this happen, nor have i ever been asked.

      • Oh, i didn't know that depreciation was a thing for TRS. I travel alone so can't share that limit. Thanks for the info.

So interesting only 18 months ago any product that Huawei launched would always attract negative comments. It is so good to see that you smart people have finally realized how good their products are.

  • hmm to buy or not to buy - JB HI FI is selling it for a similar price :)

    • visa giftcard > jb giftcard

(plus this was additional 10% off using ebay code , now its 5%) Im sure JB can match it, but the visa giftcard is still more practical

  • update - got it from JB today at lunch.

$55p/m for 24 months on Telstra for 80 gbs and unlimited national calls/sms/mms

    (Phone is free)

Offer ends tomorrow for those interested.

    • Damn! Missed it :(
