Am3+ Socket Fx 8320 with GTX 2080?

Hi there,

would like to upgrade my pc but not seeing good deals around for motherboard, cpu etc?

currently fx 8320 with r9 graphics card, which is massively outdated and performing miserably in the latest games.

how about for now, i just replace the r9 with gtx 2080, i know it will be bottlenecked but can it run decently at all?

there were days amd cpus weren't compatible with nvidia graphics cards. has it been changed?

i mainly game on a 1080p monitor for now.

motherboard - 970 chipset, pcie 2

cheers.

Please no. I'd cry if I saw an RTX2080 paired to that mobo/cpu combo.

(Honestly - for the price of an RTX2080, you can probably build a whole GTX1070-based rig.)

    Should be a massive bottleneck.

    I suggest:
    1) Buy a GTX 2070 instead, use the money saved to buy a Ryzen 2600+mobo+ram. It's overkill for 1080p monitor though.
    2) Buy a used RX 470/480 on gumtree for ~$150 to replace your r9, you should be able to play most games at max settings on 1080p.

If you can afford to buy a RX 2080 surely you can afford to upgrade your current system.

i mainly game on a 1080p monitor for now.

Also the monitor needs that upgrade before you consider plonking down $1000 dollars on a GPU. Running at 1080p just shifts all the work on to the CPU.

You'd either look at 244hz monitor (1080p) but more realistically you'd be running either high refresh rate WQHD or standard 60FPS 4k.

But upgrading the Video card without first considering the CPU and the resolution you want to run at is probably the wrong order. Perhaps split your budget evenly between the core system + GPU + and monitor.

The Bulldozer/Piledriver architecture is garbage. It was released at the same time as Sandy Bridge was all those years ago and even back then, it was completely uncompetitive, even worse than the previous generation Intel processors (Nehalem) at the time.

Today, even the very cheapest i3 8100 or Ryzen 2200G will give you much better performance. Even if you're on a super tight budget, get something like an old 2600K and motherboard for around $150 on Gumtree, OC it to 4.8 GHz and you'll have a much better gaming experience.

  • On the cpu/mobo deals, check PCCG under the "CPU" catagory. They have some nice bundles.

  • I know this deal is expired, but if you can wait for another 10% off, then best ti get this prebuilt
