Western Digital 2TB NAS drive Officeworks Clearance $209

100

Officeworks has these on clearance from $299 (if I recall correctly) to $209. Not listed on the website but see attached receipt. Cheapest price I could find online was $242.99 plus postage.

The USB 2.0 port is a let down, but not really an issue for me as the network interface at 10/100/1000 gives me a better result with my Cat 6 cabling if you are wanting to network it properly. Noticably, its silent which has not been the case with our other external hard disks.

The software interface is a little cumbersome to use (but works fine), this being my first experience with NAS drives in our office I am not sure if other manufacturers have better options.

EDIT: Forgot to mention that the supplied network cable is cat 5, so you need to supply your own if you are runing cat 6. A bit of a let down but for a cheapie drive maybe that is not unreasonable…

Thread doesn't look promising in terms of speeds. What do you get out of it ? I guess you can't expect too much for a budget NAS.

CNET seems a little confused. Subtitle says " has sub-par remote access performance." the the pros mention " Very fast performance"

  • "but not really an issue for me as the network interface at 10/100/1000 gives me a better result with my Cat 6 cabling if you are wanting to network it properly."

Cat5e will work just as well for gigabit.

    • Yeh there are different opinions on this and I don't subscribe to either opinion religiously, but having built and fitted out our new office 3 months ago and wired the whole place up with cat6 and using gigabit switches, it was an easy decision. I was referring more to the difference between usb 2 & 3, that although it would have been nicer to be USB 3, it didn't matter to me as I was using a different interface.

  • Silent = no fans?
If so, Silent = Dead drives in Summer when they overheat!

  • I use a 1tb at my work and have for over 1 year now. The speed seems fine but when two people are accessing files over the network it can be a little slow (only using CAT5).

I think it does the job pretty well and will prob grab the 2tb one for home, especially as it supports DLNA.

  • When looking at the reviews on these, keep in mind there have been (at least) 2 generations of the worldbook/worldbookII NAS.
The original has a circular blue ring. The second gen version has a blue bar.
Second gen is much faster, though still nothing to rave about.
For what its worth, even the first version is fast enough to stream a couple of videos at the same time - its just while you are trying to fill it up/back it up that the slower speed becomes a real drag.
    Hope that helps!

oh - the usb port is there to attach MORE disks! the worldbook can then share those out over the network as well. Also works with most usb hubs, so you can attach several disks to share.

Almost all inexpensive NAS boxes are slower than USB2. But as iffer mentions, that doesn't really matter.

Doesn't matter if it is 10/100/1000 Network or what drive is inside… the processor inside will be unlikely to even be able to pump out enough data for 1/2 of a 100 connection, let alone Gigabit.

And you don't need a Cat 6 cable… the cable supplied will almost certainly be Cat 5e which is absolutely fine for gigabit (especially in short runs). Hell, a cat 5 cable will probably be fine for a 1m run.
