Oppo R17 Pro or something else?

Hi,

What do you guys think of the Oppo r17 pro? I've currently got an s7 and am looking at upgrading in the near future.

I know it is somewhat overpriced compared to the competition, however, I can get 20% off and then an extra 10% off through TRS. This would bring the price down to $650 which I think is reasonable.

I'm looking for a phone with minimal bezels and a good battery /camera. Should I be considering other phones around this price range instead?

Thanks for your help!

  • Have you researched color os?

  • oneplus 6T ?

Oppo is overpriced for a bad old Qualcomm Snapdragon 710 chipset

    • Wtf, it's a 2018 chip….

      • Why would you get that when you can get a phone with 845 and cheaper. Unless you want iphone.

        • My comment was re: you saying 710 is an old chipset. It's made in 2018.

I wasnt commenting on overpriced/cheap phones.

        • The 710 is a fantastic chip - it should allow for a new "upper middle" class of phones if it gets widely adopted. Just not at Oppo's pricepoint.

  • That's what I'm thinking, for $650 it's actually okay value. Do oppo actually update their phones though?

    • Best to Google and check whirlpool forms for feedback

  • Generally, do not trust Android manufacturers to upgrade their phones. Google is trying to prod them, but their business model is pump and dump and they rather see you buying a newer model than applying security patches and updates to a good old one. And there is nothing wrong with good old phones. The secret sauce is LineageOS. Buy a phone with a good enough community and keep it running.

OnePlus 6T suggested above is a possible choice. There are people still running their original OnePlusOne with last week's software update.

I personally still maintain a Nexus 5 and a Nexus 6. Unless you play demanding 3D games, those old phones are still very good despite the age. I am a security conscious lawyer from the other side of the Pacific and prefer to avoid Chinese brands. I have had a few Chinese devices and they come loaded with adware and other consumer hostile junk. I recently bought a Samsung A5(2017) and am very happy with it. The only reason to go higher end is gaming or photography.

    • isn't OnePlus 6T Chinese brand as well?

  • Yes, OnePlus belongs to the same Chinese company that owns the Oppo brand. Which is one reason I did not buy the 6 / 6T when I was in the market earlier this year, even though they are relatively decently priced. Only relative to the other 2018 overpriced flagTitanics (Apple has even admitted going too far and restarted production of last years' model to avoid dialing back on price).
