Help with TRS

So the ozbargain mobicity sale is about to happen and I'm about to go overseas. I'm looking at getting a pixel 3 for $1054 after the discount and then claiming an additional $105 tax off to make the final price $950.

I'm travelling with my girlfriend to Thailand and I've also bought a travel camera for $420 in my name. We are travelling there together so we can claim $1800 together right? I will be staying on a little longer so we will be travelling back separately. Will I be able to bring the phone back without repaying the tax on the pixel phone?

Will I be able to bring the phone back without repaying the tax on the pixel phone?

Yeah, you'll be fine. Mobiciti only has the Pixel 3 (not the xl). It'll fit nicely into a body crevasse on the way back, so you don't have to worry about any one seeing it on your way through customs. Just remember to switch it off and not to eat anything on the plane. Lucky you're not getting the XL :)

  • Could I have my partner buy it and then I bring it back?

of course. you claim the TRS when you are leaving OZ - your concern should only be centred around leaving Australia and claiming TRS.

and when you return then you are bringing back a used phone which would be worth little.

  • FYI stock looks limited so good luck getting one. TRS is about $95.

  • Will I be able to bring the phone back without repaying the tax on the pixel phone?

Of course you may. ABF doesn't know the difference between a Pixel 3 and a Mi. Just get a case in Thailand if you're concerned.

If you want to be safe, don't bring back the original packaging.

you don't even need to bring the packaging with you.

  • you can bring back up to $900 per person (adult) and $450 (child). So together is 1800 worth for you and your partner. Packaging is not needed to claim TRS, just tax invoice and the actual item. This is all from the TRS website

  • Bringing goods back into Australia for which you have already claimed a TRS refund
If you are aged 18 years or over, you can bring up to AUD 900 worth of goods into Australia duty-free, or AUD 450 if you are younger than 18. Families travelling together can pool this allowance (a couple with one child can bring in a total of AUD 900 + AUD 900 + AUD 450 = AUD 2250 worth of goods into Australia without paying duty or GST). This is called your passenger concession.

If the total value of the goods you are bringing into Australia that you purchased overseas or for which you have claimed a refund under TRS is greater than your passenger concession:

you must declare all of the goods
you will need to repay the GST refund back on the goods you claimed under the TRS
duty and GST will apply to all items purchased, not just goods over the limit of your passenger concession.
Penalties can apply if you don't declare that you have goods in excess of your passenger concession.

  • Problem is that I'm a teacher so I'm staying on while she flies back from work. It looks like phone over $900 would need to be declared =( Do you think that there is a great chance of getting caught?
