Saw these when making a quick stop in to Ringwood Costco yesterday. Seemed a good deal. The cheapest I've seen these previously is 2 x 6 packs for $40.

Pirate Life Throwback IPA or Pale Ale $67.99

The IPA is currently $76.99 and Pale $89.90 at Dan Murphy's.

For those like me who haven't tried this brew before, have a read of these tasting notes/reviews.

…nearly 70 bucks for half strength beer? …why?

    • -3

it doesnt matter what they say, half strength beers are just half as good at most

      • Most half strength beer is just full strength beer with water added

        • +15

That may be true for a CUB or Lion Nathan product, but a decent lower strength beer will be a naturally occurring part of the process. Less sugars get turned into alcohol, meaning lower strength. These are beers to be enjoyed for their style, not to sink 15 of them and get smashed. If that's what you're interested in a $70 carton of beer, regardless of strength, probably isn't for you.

@pdtmathieson: Eh. They start with less malt for the given volume, so it's not really that different to adding more water.

The difference is that they are still properly hopped. And usually spiked with some extra crystal so they don't taste thin. No point doing that when its a waterbeer like TED to begin with.

          • @pdtmathieson: Question is how long Pirate Life beers can stay ‘craft’ for, they are owned by InBev

            • @UberIsCool: They can say craft but can't have the "independent" icon on the actual can and wouldn't be able to say it either.

      • The Peroni one is good.

And the Coopers one is good if you like a “local state beer” taste.

  • What are the best before dates on these?

    • I can see the Pale is 3 Aug 2019, from memory the IPA was a similar timeframe. Can't remember the exact date

  • +1

it does look like the Pale Ale 5.4% ABV is much better see here

Yeah. The IIPA (one of my top 10 beers) and the basic Pale are the only two beers they make worth drinking tbh. The IPA is loaded with Riwaka which is awful, the Hopco is undrinkable, the Mosaic tallies are way out of balance and the throwbacks are throwbacks. The NEIPA special release they did was such a letdown too.

      I haven't tried the golden.

The Pale is a decent drop.

You ain't a pirate if you paid for goods like this

  • Please update description content, the Throwbacks ipa is $79 at Dan Murphy’s, this is different from their IPA

  • That's a cracking price for both. Throwback is one of the best mids going around. If anyone sees these at Docklands please post!

  • +3

Let the InBev price cutting begin!

  • Can Dan Murphy's price match Costco prices?

    • Yes they do I got a price match capt Morgan at dans 1ltr $40 a bottle paid at dans

Throwback IPA is pretty average. Reminded me of celery.

Do not expect a nice hoppy IPA.

    • +1

Agreed. I reckon the Pale is the main deal here, but the throwback IPA is enjoyable in Summer. I find it more a refreshing ale.

  • Non members can shop at costco Auburn today.
Just went there and it is their family and friends day

  • Ouch! That is still expensive for a case of beer.

    • -3

…and its not even full strength! :P

      • +1

        The Pale Ale is 5.4%.
If you are after alcohol content I would suggest box wine is a better value option for you.

  • only throwback at the moorabbin store

  • +3

For that price I'd be going for an actual independent brewer not a "craft" owned by InBev.

  • Oh cool, I assume they are finally selling alcohol in SA Costco now. Thanks will pick some up today.
