Where can I get one of these for around $500??

Or are they much more expensive?

  • ebay(do distance: nearest first, auctions only)
after that you just have to rent piano movers that would cost $100+

on ebay you can find them about $1000 or less, or even 99 cents if you are lucky(i often see 99cent pianos that are in good quality, but the reason why people don't bid on it because of moving and/or no room for a piano)

go there and check out the quality, doesn't really matter if it is off tune as it is easily fixed

    a tune-up will cost less than $200

at our house we have a upright piano, cost $5000(brand new),

  • My partner has an upright piano that has two or three keys that is not working too well (higher end major/minor keys), hasn't been serviced in a while. But I think it's fixable by a professional. It's an unknown brand, made in Tasmania. Located in Greenacre, let me know if you're interested.

    • (higher end major/minor keys)

i'm assuming you meant the black keys(flats and/or sharps_

but yes, it would be easily fixed by a tuner

@ OP make sure whoever is playing it can sit on the chair, whilst having their feet firm on the ground(if not you can use big books, like the white/yellow pages)

  • Thanks guys for your advice… I will look up ebay.

abbzoid any photos? what price are you looking at?

    • Can take some photos… Can you send me a private message with your email address?
The piano belongs to my partner's mother, so he'll have to find out. He just wanted to know if you were interested.

  • Off topic, but where do you think the best place is to sell them? eBay sounds rather chancy with those 99c auctions. Is it best to sell to someone who resells?

    • best place to sell them is music stores

NOt sure what sydney stores are but in brisbanewe have

Gospel's Piano, Vivance PIano, Allen's Muusic, MAsson's Music Express

      • but they are very expensive

      • Pianos "R" Us?

    • Or you can try Gumtrees ;)

That place have many random things for sell, including piano!
      Good luck!

  • These guys are offering pretty good deals. Call them directly and get the best price.

    • Go to the store, that way you can check out the piano itself, you will notice that upright pianos have different sizes

We bought from Gospel Pianos as well,

try to haggle with them, we got a free metronome as well as about $xxx off

      • +1

or wait till they go out to the back room and grab the piano and do a runner.

  • try your local freecycle.org

I've seen a few being given away.

  • My personal experience with pianos that are less thatn $500 is scan the local newspaper for such things. Though drawback is that it could take up to 6 months before you find something.

    • Also, look for sellers that don't want their piano. Try not to buy from people who are trying to make some cash as it would be much harder to bargain.

Ask questions over phone before actualy going to the seller. If it sounds like a salesman or anything fishy, don't even go there. It would be a waste of time.

PS. I got a $530 second hand stand-up piano for my sister two years ago. So $500 pianos is possible but don't expect it to be very new and a popular brand.

  • I just scored a piano from a house 5 blocks from my place.

It was sitting out in their drive way so I went in asked if they were getting rid of it.

they said they were and i could have it.

it has a few stuck keys and needs a tune but these are minor issues. a guy who lives in the street behind me is an audio tech guy and tunes/fixes pianos. he works on a 12 BPH rate*.

pushing a piano 5 blocks is no fun.

    BPH = beers per hour.

    • pushing a piano 5 blocks is no fun.

haha lol reminds of one of Bruno Mars music video

it'd be hard to get into your house though

      • actually, I don't find getting it into the house intimidating as that just involves block and tackle, raising it up using a car jack on thick ply and a little bit of muscle. work smart not hard.

currently Mr Piano is in the garage awaiting a cosmetic overhaul.

I built a dolly out of 2X4s and skateboard wheels to move it 5 blocks. however 1 wheel came off after 2 blocks so pushing a 3 wheel dolly with 400+kgs of piano along a road was not fun. though I count it as my physical exercise for the year.
