Pod Coffee Machine Recommendation

Hi folks,

A friend saw my eclipse coffee machine I bought from this deal and asked me to find him a cheap coffee machine that gives you good coffee. He seemed to like the cafe au lait I made.

Now the same coffee machine I have is going for $100 with shipping here, it cost me a whopping $14 delivered from Amazon (originally $28 or so but the pods inside were expired, so they refunded half the amount lol), each coffee works out to be 50 cents each, which is not cheap if you ask me.

Should I just tell him to get this or should I find him a better deal? Any recommendations?
I've been poking around the web and OZB for the last hour or so but I'm confused, so many different machines, etc. He'd want a pod machine for the convenience I imagine.

Thanks team!

I used to use a nespresso pod machine. would make 3 pods before leaving the house in the morning.

3 weeks ago I bought a second hand sunbeam machine (with bonus coffee grinder) for $40 off gumtree (seller delivered it as well).

absolutely loving it over the pod machine.

a more pure and fresher coffee taste

the pods always had a very slight "plasticy"/artifical taste to them

the Lazzio coffee beans from Aldi are great and inexpensive $6.50 for 500grams (from memory)

give your friend your machine and get an espresso coffee machine instead.

plus less waste from used plastic/aluminium pods.

Yeah, at a minimum an aeropress + handheld grinder is better than a pod machine

The Nanopresso is well worth it as well.

A grinder, a Nanopresso and a milk frother make great coffee very cheaply.

The Aldi beans are also well worth it.

    • Thanks for the suggestion, I'll look into it in the future, I really don't drink coffee myself much and only use the machine when we have visitors over, it does get busy around here so it's nice and quick :)

    • I see the Sunbeam will be on sale in Amazon today, will keep my eye out!

op have you tried using recaps instead of the nescafe caps?

It might depend on taste, but I've used a few nespresso pod machines as well as the Aldi and some other versions, but highly recommend the Aldi ones.
The pods are $6 for 16 so they come out to 37.5c each.
They sometimes sell sets of the 16 packs, where you get 5 boxes of 16 for $20 (sorry can't remember the exact price)
The machine is around $70 or $80

    • Thanks for that. I remember reading somewhere the Aldi ones were good, thanks for confirming it 👍

Definitely a taste thing - I absolutely hate Aldi coffee. We have a Caffitaly one that is far nicer and comparable in cost, although a bit more.

However, our main coffee machine is a proper one that is far better economically (per cup) and environmentally. We only use the pod machine when we go away occasionally.

  • We had an Aldi machine for many years and it is quite good. Recently got a Nespresso mini and a little nicer and quieter to use than the Aldi and in my opinion the coffee is a bit nicer (even though almost twice the price). We still use a Delonghi Dedica Expresso machine as our primary coffee maker though. Good tip is the Lavazza Perfetto Expresso( green bag) ) at Woolies (half price at moment for $15 for 1kg). Our Delonghi grinder has also lasted us many years.

  • Make sure you try out some nespresso pods in store before you purchase. The coffee is not that fresh in my opinion. Better to get a proper machine.

    • No pod coffee is fresh - that's just how it is.

Taking notes from this wonderful thread am in the market now to invest in a good coffee machine but not too pricey just better than what I currently do which is boiling water with a prepackaged cappuccino coles/woolworths thing then add rest milk after it dissolves and disintegrates into the boiling water.

This is the one I used I think

Was pretty good considering the 32.5 cents per sachet.

I honestly don't drink coffee that much but might start switching from hot chocolate for health purposes (ha i know i heard that in my head too).

  • I'm currently using this one:

Pretty good frother and makes good coffee.
I like the espresso blend, but kind of hate lungo.
