Expected Life for Electrolux Vacuum

I purchased Electrolux Vacuum as part of following deal.

https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/208647

The power head is gone because the sensor is not working at all. It was covered by 2 years warranty but obviously it is well outside that window now and therefore Electrolux is refusing to take any responsibility.

What is the expected life for this vacuum? Do I have any chance to get it still repaired by Electrolux under ACCC consumer right?

Thanks for your advice.

A think a life of a few years for $199 is reasonable enough - buy a Miele next time!

  • I was 13 when the Electrolux door to door salesmen turned up to my parents house (1983).

$99 later my parents had a new Electrolux vacuum. It was retired to the garage for cleaning cars etc a few years ago.

So 30 years should be average.

PS: $99 in 1983, got me a pair of Lee jeans, a shirt and a pair of shoes all from just jeans. So in today's money i would say it was around $400 at most (I don't know where Electrolux ranked back then). But could you imagine your $400 Dyson lasting 30 years? My $700 Dyson will be lucky to see out 7 and i only vacuum the size of a garage once per week.

    • Amount of features and level of performance matters too. Imagine how much a vacuum with the features of the Dyson would cost in 1983 - it'd be far more than $400 in today's dollars. (And then you might be able to argue for more longevity)

We've traded feature set for longevity in today's appliances - which makes sense. The more moving parts, the more likely something will break sooner.

      • I don't know, the Electrolux couldn't make breakfast and the Dyson can't either. They both suck stuff up, i don't know what other features we have gained.

        • Less loss of suction through the bagless dyson than through the electrolux for one thing. Likely much better suction power too. Com'on, you know this. Don't ask stupid questions.

  • Think you are better off trying to fix it yourself or taking it to someone who knows. Look it up, there might be a solution somewhere.

  • For every $99 you spend you get 1 year of life out of a vacuum cleaner……

I have a vorwerk vk200. Average life span in Germany is 28 to 32 years

  • Under the ACL the retailer/seller is responsible for sorting out problems with faulty products. You do not have to chase manufacturers or distributors for a solution like you have been doing.
Regardless, getting 3 yrs from a cheap vacuum cleaner is not bad these days. I had a Samsung one that fizzed out after 13 months.
Best thing to do would be to learn from this and buy a quality vacuum, one that will last 20yrs + like a German made Miele. They are not that expensive and in the long run are possibly the cheapest vacuum you will ever buy.
Get the bagged one. You can negotiate a couple of boxes of bags in the deal usually. The bags do hold more than you expect are easier than messing around with a bagless.
If you get one make sure it is a German made one and has a turbo head. I recommend Good Guys, Bing Lee or HN as a last resort.

  • How much to buy another power head?

Try eBay & other places, just duck duck go 'electrolux power head', if you have a serial number, it will be easier
