Is this stuff really bad or something? If so, any recommendations for something better?

Care to explain why I'm a low life?

Just inside joke from previous supercoat deals, people hating on owners buying this for their dogs.

      • Geez, so much hate in there.
My favourite was "this dog food isn't even fit for human consumption"… well no shit.

        • The dog food zealots can be bad

If it makes you feel better do what I do - and add in some regular vegetables for your furry friends

          • @flashi007: It would be fine if they provided decent sources or some actual evidence as to why some brands are good/bad. Yet, the only time the reference anything that isn't anecdotal, is generally a site like www.petfoodreviews.com.au that looks like it's been written by a 15 year old and has no scientific basis. Wouldn't be surprised if it were all payed reviews tbh.

  • My dog has eaten this for 12 years no complaints

My grandad was a smoker and died at 95 years old, no complains. It is not about this, it is about the quality of life you want to give your pets.

  • There’s no diff between this and dog food 12kg fit $120

It is not about the price, it is about finding the right ingredients for your pet. I don't know for dogs but you can compare Supercoat for Cats vs let's say K9 Feline natural ingredients and you will see the difference.

The top ingredient isn’t very specific. We see references to “meat” and “poultry”, as well as “by-products” (which will be offal, heads, brains, feet, and all the waste not fit for human consumption). I’ll take an educated stab-in-the-dark here and say this meat and poultry is sourced very cheaply from a rendering plant, a place where diseased, disabled, dying animals are cooked up together to create a very cheap “meat” product. They often throw in other rank meats, waste oils and fats from various sources, and anything else to bulk it up and keep the cost down.

To bulk up the food they use wheat, the #1 most problematic grain for allergies and dull coat in dogs, and then a mixture of sorghum, corn, and possibly some barley as a lucky dip, AND THEN cereal by-products which amount to the remaining floor sweepings. It’s illegal to sell this stuff for human consumption, but not for pets.

Sounds like the delicious sausages I can get from my butcher!!!!

  • Beef is even cheaper at just over 20 bucks

  • This stuff isn't "bad", it's just not what some people like to feed their dog or cat.

I speak purely from personal experience with no "science" to back me up - the dry pet food found in Coles and Woolies et al is the bare minimum of standard to be classed as a food. The stuff from pet shops and vets is superior in content and nutrition. Again, this is my personal opinion from using different brands, I won't be drawn into a "can you back up this claim" argument.

Imagine taking a vitamin tablet, putting it into a large bowl of breadcrumbs, mashing it together and saying "Here's dinner!" rather than some steak and veggies.

Our family fosters cats and puppies as well as having our own family pets and we use Advance exclusively for all of them.

Having tried several cheaper brands we found a reverse economy of scale - the animals required more of the cheap food to stop being hungry, and they eat less of the expensive stuff. Also having animals with different intolerances to foods, Advance consistently gives the animals good tummies, better and firmer poo (and a lot less stinky actually). We will get animals with terrible coats and within a few days of eating Advance, they are smooth, shiny and silky to touch.

At one point we were really broke for a few weeks and we used this Supercoat brand and the dogs lost weight eating this :(

I used to use Whiskas etc from the supermarket thinking "yeah this is good enough!" until we started fostering and dealing with animals with the runs when they come into our care. Putting them straight on Advance takes a couple of days to see the change, but it happens. You go from cleaning sloppy runs to picking up decent poop :)

The vets consistently comment on the animals' health coats and clean teeth and gums when they have their vaccinations and sterilisations before being adopted.

Give it a try - I HIGHLY recommend putting your animals on this food for at least two weeks and see if you notice a difference. If not, go back to Supercoat, all you've lost is $20 buying more expensive stuff :)

    • Well Advance is not that good either in my opinion. So many cereals at that price is outrageous in my opinion. I prefer to stick to raw that way I know what I'm feeding my cat.
