Yes, these are passive speakers and require an amp.
Lots of info in the 2 threads linked at the beginning of the description.
Sound quality wise, would you think Audioengine is better?
The red colour is killing the mood though.
IMHO, buying an amp for $150+ to power these speakers would kill my mood :)
It makes more sense if you already have an amp or planning to go down that route.
Having said that I haven't read any reviews comparing the two.
I assume if the Q Acoustics were powered by a similar amp as the AudioEngine they wouldn't be too far off.
@iwearpants: There are some pretty decent chinese amps for ~$20, some really great quality ones for ~$60… don't be that idiot spending triple digit on amps unless it's for 5.1/7.1
@xrailgun: Most of the amp suggestions that have been thrown around in the other posts for these speakers have been in the $150+ mark.
There was even a suggestion by a rep to pair these with a Myryad Z240 (RRP $1199 - which was/is on sale for $399).
I think $20-$60 would be OK, I guess. @Looney might be interested in your amp suggestions.
But at this price range, I would put my money on the AudioEngine simply because the amp is perfectly matched to the speakers.
Alternatively, if space is not an issue, I would get an Amp/Receiver off gumtree.
I bought a receiver with 5 speakers, subwoofer, remote and cables for a tad over $100 about a year ago.
@iwearpants: Mate, that's a steal! Good subs are so hard to come by down under. Like 95% of the brands don't make Aus versions because the US market uses 110v, and those that do charge 3-5x more than the converted US price…
For anyone curious, from a component quality and circuit engineering perspective, the Indeed Hi-Fi or Indeed Labs or something like that (they sell exclusively on eBay)'s "cute class D" amps are pretty much as good as it gets for "dumb" 2.0 amps. I can guarantee you 80% of those that cost more are just snake oil/marketing, and the remaining 20% are marginally better, but only shows if you are really playing your speakers LOUD. Things legitimately get more expensive when you start going into 5/7 channel and bluetooth etc features, but I'm not familiar enough in those market to comment.
And yes, most amps in active speakers are perfectly good, there's a nice elegance to it too.

Richer Sounds are very highly rated as a company, however that price is an in-store exclusive. Unless you have someone that physically go to a store to purchase them and then ship them to you, I don't think you can obtain them for that price.
