Previous Tenant Used Free Council Rubbish Collection Allocation

Hi,

So we moved in this unit in the last week of September. Used 1 of the 2 allowed rubbish collections per year. Now when we called to book the second we're told that we have none left.

Agent says we have to pay the $47.

Since the year starts from July and we were in faily early during the year, shouldn't we be entitled for both the rubbish collections?

apparently not as early as the previous tenant though.

Unless it's in your rental contract I'd say you're not entitled. But best to check with tenants union.

I'd argue those collections are the right of the property owner and not the tenant. I'm sure most wouldn't mind you using it but if the previous tenant used them all then it's not something that you can recoup. But again best to check with tenants union.

As a propety owner i can confirm the rubbish collection is part of the rates and as such is linked to the property regadless (so the owners right not the tenant)
The council gives you two a year and one was used prior to your moving in, sadly there is nothing you can do other than pay the fee.
$47 is much cheaper than taking it to the tip in most cases.

The council gives you two a year

Varies depending on council. For example, I recieve four per year.

    • They are intended for the occupier to use, that's why they are usually set up so that a Tennant can use it with out going through the owner.

The point of them is to reduce dumping of rubbish.

  • +2

not surprising, i'd expect a lot of people would need to use a garbage collection when they move out. bit shit you only get 2, i'm pretty sure we have 4 per year in my council

  • Ask a neighbour if they don't plan to use one and take theirs?

    • Yes, and then you can share your next one with them. That is what we do, usually combines with a few neighbours so we all end up effectively getting more

  • +1

Nope. Other tenants used one. Consider yourself lucky they didn’t use both. They lived there from July until when you moved in, so they probably had a lot of moving rubbish to get rid of. They are at least entitled to one.

    No. Stop being so entitled.

    The landlord/owner pays the rates

They get 2 collections a year as part of the rates - the council does not care about how many new tenants are moving in and out of the property otherwise it could get exploited

They must have given one collection to the first person and one to you

They could chose not to give you a collection

Also how are you using 2 garbage collections in 2 months but questioning how someone could use it from july to end of September a 3 month period ?

      /thread. Lol.

Aren't you suppose to junk things when you're moving out, not after you've moved in?

  • Luck of the draw with the timing.

It's probably worth $47 not to have to drag your stuff all the way to the tip. Next year you will get all two, use them wisely…

ask your neighbours if they have any plans to use theirs, and then combine your rubbish

  • +5

Why do you need to have a rubbish collection anyway?

You didn't bring rubbish with you when you moved in September?

If you did, how did you generate more rubbish in just two months?

Under $50 doesn't seem an unreasonable charge.

    • +1

I thought that's the way to get 4 times per year. Twice in old place and twice in new, make a complain if someone took 1 from you. :)

  • +2

Surely $47 is not worth losing any sleep over?

    • +5

If I give you my bank details can you send me $47 please?

      • +3

Sure. Once you have done a rubbish collection.

  • Since the year starts from July and we were in faily early during the year, shouldn't we be entitled for both the rubbish collections?

The rubbish vouchers are allocated whenever the council decides to. If they allocated them while another tenant was living there then technically speaking they had access to both.

  • Just get a sledge hammer and smash the stuff to put in the bin unless it's big like a couch, that's what I usually do to avoid waiting for the next round of collections that are too far away.

    • Or do the Aussie thing and drive around your area looking for a skip bin!

shouldn't we be entitled for both the rubbish collections?

Have you ever thought about what else you might be entitled to?

  • +1

What is a council rubbish collection service? Never heard of it before. We just have the normal weekly rubbish collection here.

    • +2

It's where people can put out the furniture they bought from Ikea one year ago and the council will come and collect it.

      • +1

Or where people may grab a nice bit of furniture, meanwhile having the council saying they will charge them for theft.

  • +1

    $47.

This is cheaper for 2*1sqm. Hire a small bin may set you back ~$350.
