Was just about to post about this, I guess once you played your best card but still failed, there is no point on still missing out on making more money.

    • +3

I'm not sure they "failed" exactly. They probably got a nice little bump just before the shutdown out of everyone stocking up for the apocalypse.

      • +1

Failed in regards to stopping it being implemented.

        • +13

          Agreed,
Amazon wanted to make a higher margin. com.au so they could milk our market just like everyone else does

I'm sure it backfired, and their previous customers just disappeared.

Aliexpress and eBay have no problem servicing our market

          • +3

            @greatlamp: This.

I moved thousands per month to other sites that shipped here. Still wont change my spending habits as I'm spending in Amazon (Europe), not US. So this news doesn't really help me too much.

As soon as Amazon closed the doors, I went looking for other suppliers, found a few. Now Amazon need to compete with my other suppliers which they never needed to, and if I base it on price and service, Amazon may come out second.

Funny how loyalty takes so long to achieve but is even quicker to loose.

            • @mrhugo: I thought the non-us amazons also blocked us. What are the good alternatives you found?

        • I knew what you meant, my point was that their motivation isn't necessarily what you think.

          • @mattythecapybara: If their motivation was just to get a bump in sales, then there would have been no need to wait almost 5 months to change it.

            • @tryagain: I believe it was to get as many people used to the .au site as well as sign up for prime there and become regular spenders on that site.. and it worked if you look at all the people who signed up for prime as well as all the amazon.com.au deals that came on ozbargain.

              • +2

@lonewolf: Giving their local site boost would more than likely have been a reason for it, but I think they were probably hoping some of the other big sellers would also have followed their lead. If eBay and Ali joined them the outcry would have been tenfold and a lot more pressure would have been on the Gov, as it played out though Ali and eBay easily implemented the change (making a mockery of Amazon's excuse) and due to the lack of range available on their local offering, it would have led to a loss in custom on the whole to their competitors, how much this was offset by their AU sites only they would know.

  • +2

Nice! I'm still getting an error with Amazon US products though, might not 100% be in place yet.

We are currently unable to ship items sold by third parties to Australian shipping addresses.
Please check to see whether Amazon sells the item you would like to purchase or choose a shipping address that is not in Australia to proceed. Some restrictions may still apply depending on the item.

However I'm trying to checkout with an item shipped from Amazon US, weird.

    • +3

It seems that items showing as "sold by Amazon Export Sales LLC" can be shipped to AU but those showing as "sold by Amazon.com Services Inc" can't.

      • +1

Yeah it was fixed about an hour after my comment, all good now :)

    • It is still 21st in US, article says starting from 22.

  • +8

great news! But only for Amazon US products for now, not any third party sellers.

  • So are they going to actually let their Prime members know? Or we have to hear about it from the news..?

To confirm then prices when we goto Amazon US site are in USD right?

Edit - anything I try tells me it can't still…

We are currently unable to ship items sold by third parties to Australian shipping addresses.
Please check to see whether Amazon sells the item you would like to purchase or choose a shipping address that is not in Australia to proceed. Some restrictions may still apply depending on the item.

The items show as sold by "Amazon Export Sales LLC" or in the listings just "Ships from and sold by Amazon.com". Event items that have the "Shipping to Australia?…" dialogue. Not sure what they're on about as this should be now allowed??

  • +4

Does it mean Amazon.de, Amazon.it or others can deliver to Australia?

    • I'd like to know too

    • Unfortunately Article says .com only for now

    • +1

I asked the author and he said only US.

      • +1

Eligible items are only those sold by Amazon on Amazon.com and not other international sites like Amazon.de, Amazon.ca or Amazon.co.uk. Items sold by third-party sellers through its international stores are also not yet covered by the technological fix.

  • Fantastic news (and just in time for Black Friday I hope), thanks OP.

  • +1

    This is such good news.

  • +15

I wish they would just load the full US eligible inventory on the AU site, not just a selection (even if only some qualify for free shipping).

As it stands, for those with AU prime there may be some products that are cheaper from the AU store (because free international shipping on eligible items), which IMO makes life annoyingly complex (i.e. checking the US store and the AU store for the best price before purchase).

    • +3

Does prime not work across the other Amazon sites? That's pretty lame if not.

      • +1

No, annoyingly the Prime benefits only work on the local Australian amazon site.
This change kinda makes prime seem a bit pointless tbh :/

        • Prime shipping, prime video, twitch prime, prime cloud storage not enough bang for your buck?
I'd have prime even without the shipping benefits TBH.

          • @downbythecreek:

            prime video

I forgot this existed. Might be time to get the old Xiaomi Mi Box out of the cupboard, thanks!

            • @idonotknowwhy: Amazon really need to add casting to prime video. And ideally get their app on Telstra TV. As it stands, I have no easy way of watching prime video on the TV. Amazon are dreaming if they think I'll buy a fire TV stick just because they refuse to support casting.

            • @idonotknowwhy: Homecoming is worth watching!

    • +2

Items on the US site that are also on the AU will show a message saying so on the bottom right corner.

      • +1

OK, that's less annoying. I'd still rather have everything on one site though.

  • I think this move has got to worry old Gerry H and the JB/GG and might finally force them to be more competitive !

    • -3

There are higher costs of operation in Australia.

Australian store are forced to buy from the Australian distributor, sometimes at a price higher that what Amazon would sell to its US customers.

old Gerry will be forced to stop stocking uncompetitive lines, beginning a viscous cycle towards bankruptcy.

lookup what happened to Best Buy USA

      • +3

True there are higher costs, but my years working at JB I was able to call up suppliers LG, Dali, Beko for example and to buy products on staff was 50% off.. Alot of the products sold are making a killing for these companies in Aus hence JB is still turning over Millions of profit each year.. All that means is Aussie companies will need to be more competitive and not make as much.. Gerry just complains because of his poor business model and his franchise system sucks.

        • The staff incentives are funded by training and/or marketing dollars, they use it to suggest you;l sell more if you use their product it doesn’t mean the company isn’t losing money selling you their product at 50% off

          • @Japius: They werent staff incentives just normal buy prices, even with Lg with 50% off they are still making money their regional rep even told me its amazing how cheap electronics cost to make thats why JB have 40% off speakers twice a year and still make money too. Its just customer perception and marketing on what an item is really worth in this day and age..

  • -2

This is great news. Does anyone know what is their approach with GST for items <$1000 ? Are they going to charge it similar to when we were forced to buy through amazon.com.au or pretend the 10% GST does not exist(Hurrah!) like some Chinese ecommerice sites do?

    • +1

      Gst is applied at checkout.

      • -4

None of my Amazon AU purchases in the past couple of months actually charged GST anyway

        • +16

Amazon AU prices already have GST included, just like anywhere else in Australia.

  • +6

Appears to be working now (not getting an error).

This is actually a shit move. So instead of them fixing things and adding items sold by Amazon US to the “Global Store” on AU instead they can just not do that and make a shitton more from shipping as now won’t get free shipping over $49… BS.. real sour taste in my mouth over this, can’t wait to see how they try spin it.

    • BS.. real sour taste in my mouth over this, can’t wait to see how they try spin it.

What? Why does this need to be spun at all? It's literally: "Delivery from the US costs too much to offer free shipping."

      • +5

But one of the Prime benefits is free shipping over $49 for AU users.

        • Again - that probably only makes sense financially for Amazon for products already in Australian warehouses (and only select products from US warehouses).

I still don't see why this needs to be spun at all - it should be self-evident, for obvious reasons (and now I'm being redundant) that shipping from the US would cost more, and therefore might not be viable to offer free shipping on.

          • +7

            @HighAndDry:

Again - that probably only makes sense financially for Amazon for products already in Australian warehouses (and only select products from US warehouses).

No, the Amazon Prime benefit is "FREE Standard International Delivery" for orders over $49.
            https://www.amazon.com.au/b?ie=UTF8&node=5801287051

However, Amazon is only giving you this benefit when you shop from their AU website, not their US website. Hence that's a real jerk move for Prime subscribers.

If they don't fix this then they're really undermining the whole free-shipping promise.

          • +1

@HighAndDry: Purchase products from the U.S. via Amazon.com.au. Spend over $49 and get free international shipping if you're a Prime member.

  • +10

    Yeah I just saw this.

Is this basically just admitting that amazon.com.au was a fail? It has had its good deals certainly, but I highly doubt it was the game changer everyone was fearing it would be.

eBay is still getting all our profits.

Either way, great news - maybe this can be the game changer that makes the market competitive.

    • +3

I do t think amazon au is a fail.
I think it’s just taken longer than they hoped to get ageeements in place for certain product departments.
They have confirmed they will resell Apple in au from December and others are coming.
once they “relaunch” next month which apparently will include some pretty big brands being sold on the platform things will improve.

      • +1

Oh right haha a "relaunch" will fix everything.
Maybe they should've actually put Amazon US stuff on Amazon AU? Rather than just a few random items from US?

        • I agree. It’s funny cause the complaints we all have now are the exact same ones everyone had in the UK when their local site launched.
If the rumours are true then amazon will be the only place to buy certain brands online outside of the brand websites themselves.
I would prefer to see the us stuff all just be available through the au site too. Especially with the prime shipping (u don’t get free shipping from .com)
I think amazon will improve it’s just not happened quick enough I guess

        • +1

          amazon au 2.0

        • Just because they can do that, doesn't somehow get rid of the geographical issue of Australia being thousands of miles away from the US, and thus cost a tonne more to ship items to.

      • relaunch was meant to be before Black Friday though : /.

  • +7

Look forward to seeing Gerry having a Sooky La La on the news tonight?

    • +7

I'd rather not see Gerry fullstop.

  • +1

Amazon AU has been crashed by the storm of eBay AU coupons/deals.
At least I've spent thounds on eBay au recently but only $300 on Amazon au.
Though I've paid the prime, a pity.

I guess there's still not many things or good deals to buy on amazon au at the moment.

    • +1

I think Amazon AU felt the same burn as Aussie retailers. The huge mark ups are at the distributor level. Like how they deal with businesses who grey import. Instead of being more competive with their pricing they get lawyers involved.

Remember when Aldi had to pull their powercube deal last year?

  • +2

Amazon AU is poorly operated. The shopping experience is a disaster…

    • +3

They've opened an additional larger Sydney warehouse but Amazon AU is still mostly Chinese sellers from Ebay.

    • +4

Not for me… well over two hundred tranactions for me… all perfect.

      • No issues for me When it comes to thing being sold by Amazon and shipped to me within 2 days with my prime account. The only thing that too awhile were a set of 3 microsd cared that took about a week to arrive, but that was because it was through a 3rd party seller.

  • +1

I guess Amazon found a web developer who was able to add GST to their system. That went from an insurmountable problem to easy real quick.

    • +1

haha, typical web developer answer :p
I guess you could build Uber over the weekend as well right?

  • Let me try that again… for those interested Samsung S9 for around $730 delivered.

    • +3

Before someone asks, here are the bands

      4G LTE Band 1, 12, 13, 17, 18, 19, 2, 20, 25, 26, 28, 29, 3, 34, 38, 39, 4, 40, 41, 46, 5, 66, 7, 8
      GSM 2G Frequency 1800, 1900, 850, 900
      CDMA 2G Frequency 1900, 800, 850
      GSM 3G Frequency 1700, 1900, 2100, 850, 900
      CDMA 3G Frequency 1900, 800
      4G LTE Frequency 1700, 1800, 1900, 2100, 2300, 2500, 2600, 700, 800, 850, 900

      • So same same as Australian stock then?

    • It's $519 now!

      • +1

That's US pricing, once converted to AUD plus shipping it still works out to $730.

  • Amazon announces shipping to Aus. Swagbucks account gets deactivated.

A win some, lose some, kind of day.

  • Any way possible to get free international shipping from us?

    • Nope, gotta pay when would be free over $49 if on Amazon AU. Obviously they won't list US items on AU now..

      • +1

The items that were previously available via the Global store or Amazon AU will still be listed on .com.au and be eligible for prime shipping when over $49
All they have done is removed the shipping restrictions on the other sites and applied GST at checkout.

They have also stated they will continue to add items that can be sourced internationaly to the AU store

So nothing has changed as far as the AU store is concerned.
they have literally just removed the au block form non au stores

We are pleased to be able to offer Australian customers selection from Amazon.com, complementing the over 80 million products available on Amazon.com.au. This includes almost 20 million items from Amazon US through Global Store on amazon.com.au, many of which are eligible for fast, free shipping for Prime members in Australia.

        • +1

But why would they continue to list Amazon US items on the AU site now? Or at least why add anything new? Everything I bought via the "over $49 free shipping" was from Amazon US.

      • @deelaroo "Obviously they won't list US items on AU now.."
Nope. Nothing in their statement about that.

Anyway, if you are a member of Amazon Prime US, shipping has never been that high for me in the past. If purchasing through the Amazon Global store via Amazon AU with a Prime membership, then purchases over A$49.00 getting free shipping is a bonus.

        • Nope. Nothing in their statement about that.

Obviously Amazon won't put it in writing. But it's pretty obvious what games they are playing at.

  • +2

Will this also apply to other Amazon stores!?
Most important to me in amazon Japan.

    • +1

There is an article that states ALL amazon intenational stores will now ship to AU and that GST will be collected at checkout

But Amazon said on Wednesday that in response to "customer feedback", it would reopen its American and other international sites to Australian shoppers

      • Haha, I gave them hell on the phone and via email follow up…politely of course.

  • +2

Hi, I'm writing a story about this for Reuters; would anyone be available to talk about what, if anything, this means from a customer's perspective. My email's [email protected]

    • This is just Amazon trying to make more money.

They offer Amazon AU Prime Members free shipping over $49 for items from Amazon US via the AU site. But if they pull this change then they can just not list on the AU site and costs us extra and lose a Prime benefit.

  • +5

I've messaged TA to ask if we can get a Cashrewards cashback for Amazon US purchases. Will post here if I hear back.

[update] TA is waiting for Amazon to confirm everything in writing first. Hopefully this will happen soon.

    • +1

Awesome, cheers for the effort mate. Hopefully goes through in time for Black Friday deals!

    • Any update mate? Or still waiting?

      • +1

Nothing yet. I’m sure TA will post as soon as an arrangement is made, as it would be huge.

        • +1

I suspect you could use Ebates or another US based cashback. They redeem via paypal which is good

        • +6

Hi 44sunsets & others. We now have confirmation that sales will track via Cashrewards from Amazon's Global Store provided you remain within the amazon.com.au domain for the duration of your transactions. If you move across to the amazon.com domain at any stage for whatever reason (even via an Amazon internal link), your tracking will break.

To make it simpler, I've created this specific offer which has an inbuilt tracking link - ignore the expiry date (it's a system requirement). Hitting Shop Now from this link will drive you straight to the Global Store where you can shop and get Cashback. If at any stage the domain changes to amazon.com, tracking will fail. Do not copy/paste links as this too will break tracking.

Feel free to hit me up with any questions :)

          • +1

@tightarse: Awesome, thank you very much TA!

[Update] Just had a look around on the Amazon Global store, sadly none of the items I'm after is sold there (I'm mostly buying Nerf stuff like Rival Kronos or orange trigger blasters like the Stryfe which typically costs a lot more locally), so I'm still going to have to use the Amazon US site directly for that. I appreciate the effort nonetheless, nice work!

  • +1

Looks like the old deal where you get free shipping to Australia when you spend $150+ USD on clothes etc from Amazon.com as the seller is gone 😭 that was great.

Also noticed its gone for shipping to NZ as well and they added Inport fees for shipping to NZ that I didn't see before. 😭😭

  • +3

I guess they got tired of handing all their customers to eBay on a silver platter

  • +4

I love the PR spin they put on this “due to customer complaints” bullshit.

This was a money decision only. They saw massive lost sales in Aus due to Amazon AU being a huge flop.

    • They saw massive lost sales in Aus due to Amazon AU being a huge flop.

I doubt it somehow. Our market is nothing to Amazon.

      • Money is money. If even a drop of 5% in overall Aus profit they would look at ways to recoup that.

  • EDIT: OUTDATED

  • Im confused, im trying to purchase this from this US Amazon store and it states "$9.13 Shipping & Import Fees Deposit to Australia" but then when I try to checkout, i get an error saying it can't be shipped to Australia.

    • +2

Not all stuff is shipping to Australia at this time. I believe it's only items sold directly by Amazon themselves that ship here.

    • It's a third party seller, from the "Sold by NewEnglandTech and Fulfilled by Amazon."

Hopefully they'll allow third party sellers to ship internationally again soon, but I guess we'll have to wait a bit longer.

  • +1

Meh. I used to spend around $1K on Amazon every year but haven't spent a cent on anything Amazon related since 30th June. Got into the habit of using alternative Retailers so it will be up to Amazon to win me back.

  • +1

Still waiting for them to lift the ban on Amazon Europe (UK, Italy, France, Germany, Spain). Hopefully it is on the agenda
