Best Type of Gas Hot Water System

Looking for fellow OzBargainers to share your experiences with storage vs instantaneous/continuous flow gas hot water systems, and which would you recommend?

I need a new hot water system, and a plumber has recommended me a gas storage tank (Rheem Stellar 360) and quoted $2200. When I asked about the option of instantaneous (eg. Rinnai Infinity 26), they advised me against it saying energy savings were minimal and service is harder. This was despite instantaneous offering them a bigger fee (about $1000 more) to change to larger gas pipes.

We have two bathrooms, but currently it is just the two of us using them for 90% of the time. We do have family staying once or twice a year, and do plan to have kids in the future.

  • That's a large enough system. You won't run out of hot water*.

*unless you run 4 baths in a row as in within an hour. 170 litres of hot water goes a long way and it doesn't take long for the water to reheat. In the time it takes for someone to have a bath or dry off from a shower it would have reheated enough to go again.

I'd go with storage and yes the energy savings are minimal if you actually do use hot water every day. You would save energy if you rarely used hot water but I'm sure most households, even one person households, do at least use some hot water each day.

I would pick the 330 instead of the 360 to save. It's smaller but it still has plenty of water and recovery times are short.

  • If price is a problem then check out Bunnings for a possible better deal. I believe that they can organise installation also. Your gas retailer may also be able to help.

  • I’d get an instantaneous, just don’t get a small one, 9 Ltr per shower head min. Something like a 26 or bigger, plumbers have said the same negative things to me before about instantaneous, I think the amount of people in the house effects the cost effectiveness of the storage tank. two people who are always at work better with instant. For what it’s worth my electrician said the opposite to the plumber and recomended an instantaneous.
I’ve had an rinnai instant for years and haven’t had any problems with it.
Maybe the cheap Chinese knock off brands aren’t as reliable?
I’d be wary of tradies recomending big appliances, they often have a incentive program with the wholesaler or manufacturer, this happens alot with air conditioning, they recommend the brand they can make the most profit/rebate off.
The unit he is recommending is worth $1050 retail. Harvey Norman are quoting $1800 fully installed, I’d be getting a few quotes.

  • +1

Isn't there 2 Rinnai Infinity 26's? Like one comes with a led display and one doesn't? I remember looking at them a while ago and the one without the led display was a a little bit cheaper

    • Yeah I think you can get a digital controller that is extra

  • Thanks for the feedback everyone, I will get some more quotes and consider the options.

    • It’s a bit old topic but which one did you go with and how is it doing?

      • Went with gas storage, Aquamax G390SS. It has been fine, only issue is a few times the pilot light has gone out. Easy enough to reignite but just annoying as you only realise from hot water running out.

If I could choose again I’d probably go for heat pump electric hot water. I’ve changed out my gas heating of the house so hot water is the only thing using gas so not really worth it
