Tips for Getting Cheapest Flight to New York City from Brisbane

Hello! I wanna go to New York City in mid March but I'm poor!

Worst part about it is, it looks like I'm gonna have to pay $500 extra just for living in Brisbane, rather than Sydney even though I'm closer as the bird/plane flies…

Looking for advice about cheapest days to leave and return etc.

And yeah, if I could have booked 6 months ago, I would have but I didn't know this was a thing until a few days ago.

I'm sorted once I get there, it's just flights that are a killer….

If your poor NYC isn't for you

    • Thanks but I thought I was clear, once I get there, I'm sorted, free accommodation etc. I have free accommodation and feet.

  • What is your budget??

    • My budget is "cheap as possible"

I'm sorry but that doesn't help. What rough dates. Do you want to do just NYC or a couple of other cities as well?

Figure out a budget for your holiday. That means ideal and absolute max on flights and accommodation.

Flights to New York are usually around the $1500 mark. Sometimes in the off-peak season, you can get deals for <1000

From a quick search on skyscanner I found BNE - LAX - JFK dept the 12th March, return 22 March for $1318. I suggest you spend 7.5/8 days in NYC(not that you couldn't spend 10 easily) and do a couple in Washington. Then fly back from JFK. You can easily get the train to DC or Philly.

It was about the same from Melbourne.

Of course, if it is $500 more to fly from Brisbane, you could go to Sydney the night before, get a hotel and fly from there for $950 but you'd probably save ~$200

The expensive bit is the accommodation while there. Don't stay near times square. Stay on the Manhattan side of the Brooklyn Bridge. I can help you with accommodation once you've sorted flights.

        • I got a friend living there, I'll sleep on his floor if I have to. Thanks for advice about DC, I'll look into that. If I had to get accomdation, I wouldn't even be considering it

          • @jonathonsunshine: There’s no reason to save up a bit more and go for longer.
Might want to check your mate is ok with you crashing on their floor for 10 days lol.

Also remember you can always go back. No one is going to stop you.

            • @Randxyz123: YYeah, he won't be there.forever though, if go later, I'll have to pay for accommodation and won't be able to cook at home etc

        • My other mates booked a ticket the other day, march 8th to 18th, I'll go a day or two earlier or later if it will save me a considerable amount but I doubt it'll be much cheaper than the $1150 I've sussed out already

  • Who said it was $500 more from Brisbane?
    What are the dates?

    • I put some dates into Skyscanner and Sydney came up $950, Brisbane was $14xx

So fly to Sydney for $200,

Korean air is 1200 5th to 19th, I did this research whilst doing a dump. How much effort you put in.

      • I’m getting $1076 from Brisbane on google flights

  • Korean Air have flights in March for $1330~ return which is only $260 more than ex SYD on the same dates. Seems to be available on a number of days across the month & total time on segments each way is approx 25hours~

Price is based on supply and demand, not where you are located

  • Find out what this Muff cabbage is I hear it's cheap.

  • https://iwantthatflight.com.au/ is generally the best website for cheap flights.

I have to agree with @sunny84, if you haven't got very much money then seriously reconsider going to NYC. Nothing there is cheap.

    • Cheers,I do appreciate it and yeah, I've already gotten the price down to $1150 through wotif, I think that might be about the lowest I can get it. I have a friend who is living there ATM, I'll be sleeping on his floor but yeah, this is probs the best opportunity I'll ever get to go to New York, I'll only be a week or so, I'll live off cereal if I have to and tickets to Stephen Colbert tapings are free.

  • Qantas sometimes have :Partner fly free" so if you can find another person would be good.
Try other airports not just JFK.
Check flights to Dallas or Boston then fly/bus/train to NY.
Try Hawaiian Airlines and NZ Air.

Don't forget to factor in cost of Passport and travel insurance.

Have fun. I love NY. (Can you give me your friends' contact LOL?)

  • You could investigate flying to LAX/SFO on one of the $650 Fiji Air deals (or the $780 VA deal), and then see how cheap you could get a domestic flight to New York on Southwest (or DC, and then get a dirt cheap megabus to NYC)
