Cheap E-Reader for PDF's (800x600 or higher resolution)

I frequently have to print off PDF files and ebooks (in PDF format) as a business student.

However lately I find that printing documents and then later on throwing them away after I've read them seems like a big waste of ink and paper

Hence the need for a e-reader with a long battery life, a large 6+ inch screen and a decent resolution that allows for reading of PDF files. That way I can look at my reading material without ever having to print anything.

Criteria is:

  • High resolution (800 x 600, or higher) with 6 inch or more viewing area.
  • PDF support (things like DRM support is not required)
  • It doesn't matter if it's LCD or e-ink screen
  • 4+ hour battery life
  • Max cost $160

Any ideas? I don't mind buying from overseas if that's the case.

  • Non of the ebook readers on the market read PDFs well, especially if your PDF's are formatted for A4. Having said that, I tolerate it since I don't want to be carrying 3000 pages of practice notes around but the experience is less than ideal. Your main problem will be scrolling and navigating, to read a two column PDF I have to hit the navigation buttons up to 10 times to go through a page (3 down, 2 across and 3 up to the start of the page again and then 3 down to get to the bottom of the page). Either that or you display the page full size, and squint.

I would recommend either a kindle DX or an ipad, the time you save and the experience would be well worth the extra 200. Failing that, almost all eink readers are less than 200 at 6", I remember you posting a deal for a kobo (which I bought) for $99 and that might still be on. Cheap android based tablets are also a good shout.

      ^ this

sister wanted an e-book reader but got an iPad instead

      Reason Screen Size
Many ebook readers screen are very small
Capacity of approx 2GB(of which is hard to fill up with .pdfs)

If you do want an ereader, go with kobos, sony ereaders, or kindles

      EDIT
Also remember the file extension of the file needed, i forgot but some don't have the capability of reading .pdf

  • Thanks guys.

Looks like I will have to splurge a bit more and get a Android tablet then.
