Gaming Laptop for around $1000, ONLY for Gaming, No School or Uni

Hey there you bloody legends of ozbargain,
I’m new here and would like some help on buying a cheap gaming laptop for my gaming needs. I will not be overly concerned about battery life as I’m not taking it to school or anywhere very much. The reason why I’m not making a PC/Gaming desktop is because there’s not enough room in the house, already 2 PC’s and an Xbox One. I figured a gaming laptop would be nice, small and hopefully powerful. Minimum GTX1050ti and a hopeful GTX 1060.

Also would buying a gaming laptop from gumtree be trustworthy or legit? Here’s a link to one where we are discussing the details but agreed on a price of $1150 - https://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/melbourne-cbd/laptops/gaming…

Help would be very much appreciated, thanks!

  • I'm not sure if you'll get around the 1060 mark without going second hand?
Probably best to keep a constant look out in refurbished sites for places like HP and Dell and things like that, for just the 1050 though I saw these:
    HP Pavilion Power - 15-cb063tx (Refurbished) $1299 - https://h20386.www2.hp.com/AustraliaStore/Merch/Product.aspx…
    OMEN by HP Laptop 15-ax236TX (Refurbished) $1499 - https://h20386.www2.hp.com/AustraliaStore/Merch/Product.aspx…

But a bit above the price range and no idea if they're any good (and they're just the 1050).

For the $1000 mark, good luck, hopefully maybe black friday sales help?

    I posted this earlier
Likely the best value for money for brand new with warranty, black friday might bring better deals.
Gumtree is always a risk, ask the guy if he has original receipt for warranty.

    • Yes I saw that, thinking about it. Do you know how much longer the sale will be?

      • Ends 26/11. Great if there’s nothing special this Friday.

  • gaming laptops tend to overheat in my experience. if you are using a monitor setup, definitely get a desktop

I have purchased many laptops over the years off Gumtree and can say that majority of sellers are honest and minimal are dodgy.
The pros are that you can save heaps.

    Tips:
1 - Ensure that the seller is local where you can buy in person and at their home/workplace. Not in a car park of a shopping centre. Ensure you have their mobile # etc
2 - Ask for a demo and use the USB ports etc. Run a game and see how it performs.
3 - Alienwares and the like have a Hardware Diagnostics utility. Run it and see if there are issues detected. (However it is not foolproof)
4 - Ensure the seller has the genuine receipt, current and has purchased it locally (not from OS) as the warranty will be honoured just in case.
5 - Ask for a hand written receipt. Some are OK and some are not doing this. That will indicate if they have anything to hide IMO

    Disclaimer:
Please note if you are worry about anything that can go wrong. Buy new!!! Simple. Spend the extra cash

    Good luck

    Cheers

  • I bought a lemon laptop a few years ago off gumtree but the fault was on me. I met him at a random street location he had given me and he was just standing there with a laptop which should have been the first warning sign. Fortunately only around the $500 mark which was still a lot but using some spare parts I had lying around I was able to fix it up and sell it on with a small loss.

I think you could buy off gumtree with absolutely no dramas but you just have to be smart about it.

  • Looks like this gumtree guy is a bit dodgy. He/she takes ages to reply, even if I reply a minute after he does. And his english doesnt seem too great either. Ithink I'll pass… :(

    • Have you called and spoken to this person or are you going by an email enquiry?
I mean I sell stuff off Gumtree and TBH, there are too many time wasters that email ridiculous offers, ask stupid questions that indicate minimal interest and I don't even bother to reply.
A phone call will get a serious response IMO. If they are still flaky then pass
      Cheers

    • That has already been recommended but thanks anyway.
