Fad? I dont think I could live without one of these now.

Bad ones are not worth it, because they don't work. Good ones are amazing. No idea which category this is.

      • +3

Agree, i don't know what i would do without my robot, makes cleaning so much easier.

      • Got one a few years ago - was pretty good. Definitely worth the price compared to the competition. Was actually better than the Hoover we got as a gift the year before.

Our place is fully tiled, so not sure how they'd go with carpet, but run on a schedule it kept it pretty tidy. Also depends on how messy your floor gets, but you may end up needing to vacuum by hand at some point to give it a proper clean and get the spots the robot misses. It's "intelligent obstacle avoidance" (at least on our one) is a bit lacking - ours managed to get itself stuck under kitchen chairs if it's unlucky (hits leg, turns 90 degress, hits next leg, rinse & repeat till flat).

Depending on how large your place is too, you may find you need to confine it to the main areas (kitchen, dining, lounge, etc) so it doesn't get lost down a hallway and spend its charge going over the same spot.

Not sure what the changes are with this version, so it would (hopefully) be better than ours.

      Definitely not a fad.
My place has never been cleaner.

The Xiaomi Robot Vaccuum Cleaner has totally changed my life, I have pets that shed like it's going out of fashion and I come home to a fur free house every day.

Times have changed since the old crappy robot vacs that were only good as a paper weight. Everyone I talk to who has bought one absolutely loves it. Absolute game changer.

        • +9

Wait. You leave home whilst leaving your fridge on, hot water systems active, computer(s) turned on, laptop's on charge, and TV's plugged-in and active. Talk about a major fire risk!

        • +3

i'm not downvoting you but you're not being realistic
robot vacuums move slow and along the floor, it's true it drags extension cords sometimes but it's ok if you bunch them up and clear them before a vacuum, but other than that they'll more often than not bump into something and then vacuum around it
and real life isn't like a home alone movie where you tip like a solitary candle on a table over and and suddenly it falls onto the table cloth and your curtains catch on fire and it breaks off into a bucket of emergency kerosene you leave in the corner of the room

a cat or dog would burn your home down sooner before a robovac would

          • +2

@[Deactivated]: Anything involving moving parts (ie. heat) and a battery is a fire hazard. Especially if it sucks up something that jams it. Try to deny it all you want.

            • +2

@PainToad: I dunno why you get downvoted. If a world top mobile phone can blow up, your comment really make perfect sense. Upvoted.

              • @jpl: Because ignorance is bliss? Or they're renters who don't care about the house they live in? ¯_(ツ)_/¯

    • +1

Definitely over, it's working properly now and no longer a fad

    • +3

Do you own a dishwasher or washing machine or are they fads too?

    • my son doesn't know a world without them.

    • +2

My wife loves hers. It freed her up to spend more time cleaning other areas of the house.

      • Lol thought you were gonna say to spend more time with the kids 😂

I've tried the Aldi robot vacuums and they suck..

    • +2
      • +3

        And i meant metaphorically..

Xiaomi is the minimum standard for a robot vac.

  • +4

save your cash and put it towards a Xiaomi for $300+

    • can the Xiaomi mop?

      • +1

V2 can mop. A V2 would cost you about $450.

I have one and since I dont have carpets, it does a really good job and I'm happy with it so far

        • yeah just pulled up all the carpets wooden floors now. so a decent robot mop would be cool

  • Any reviews on this?

Most of the online reviews on aldi robot vacuum cleanrs have been for the 'stirling' model and this looks a bit different.

    • +4

Previous experience with Aldi Special Buys™ products is no indication of current model.
Generally different model (& possibly manufacturer) to previous ones.

Only way - Try & easy return within 60 days.
(Well that'll be my cleaning done for a while😉)

  • Interesting mops too.. will be good to see a model no.

  • +1

Not really a mop. More just dragging a damp rag around. Personally, I want vac only.

    • More just dragging a damp rag around.

Well, mopping is this but with a stick attached to it…

      I'd much prefer a robot than a stick! :)

      • +1

The only true robot mop is the irobot scooba series (390) which puts down clean water and sucks up the dirty water into a dirty tank. But I take your point.

    • If it's similar to the previous version I have, the mop is an attachment you clip on (as you said - dragging a damp rag around). So you don't need to use it if you don't want to.

  • Interested in the bagless vacuum they have for $45 which is $5 lower than last year. But when they first came out like 5 years ago they were $40. Inflation I guess.

Anyways, anybody have one of these and can comment? Is it still only 1.5L in capacity? I particularly like the speed control. Big W has a Contempo one for $48 which has speed control too and 2L capacity. But lower power of 1800W, no HEPA filter, no fold out brush attachment with the crevice tool which is very handy (kinda why I stopped myself from getting it during this weekend's friends and family discount + woolies egiftcard).

  • Anyone end up buying this? Thoughts/reviews?

    • +1

      See below.
Haven't vacuumed for a while (on holidays) & certainly filled it's bin with dust etc in a short time on carpet. Yet to learn how to get best out of it.

This looks like the My Genie ZX1000 which is currently $179 at Kogan. Even the remote control is the same. Reviews at productreview.com.au (https://www.productreview.com.au/p/my-genie-zx1000.html) has it at 3 stars out of 5.

    • Can confirm body (except metal look top & different colour plasic) is identical to that kogan one.

Of course operation, software, & hardware may be different - to simply the look of case & remote. Kogan have been selling that model for a while.

      Don't Pay $1199… 😉
      $229 + Delivery RRP $1,199 @DS

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/311995

Buyers for Aldi simply rebadge available units from manufacturers.

Could try & return @Aldi & if like, buy from Kogan with free Shipster delivery.

    • There are some differences.
Kogan model includes a IR virtual wall to block areas - not included in this model.

Picked one up last night (after Brisbane OzBargain Birthday meet).

Stirling (home brand) "now with intelligent water tank" - plenty available at local store.

It's whizzing around doing my cleaning. Never used this kind of device so don't know what to expect.

Needs assistance with slight change in surface height - from carpet to tile (wheel comes off 1 surface when approached at an angle) - shuts down & calls for help. Could be annoying, but can easily place obstacle to confine range to one surface.

States 90 minutes use… After many minutes of banging around in a corner, & 15 minutes use - it announced it was off to auto-charge (it still is banging around trying to find the charger 15 minutes later).
(Yet to read manual to solve the issues.)

Considering the house is being renovated, materials & dirt everywhere - seems to be doing good job on carpet.

Doubt I will see the $199 benefit. Enjoying playing with it, but likely to be returned within 60days - house should be very clean by then.

      Update:
After over a week of use, quite impressed.
Does a reasonable job vacuuming on carpet & tile.

Spilt a sticky drink on kitchen floor, so set it the clean up task. Floor is clean, no sticky residue. Releases a film of water (with suitable cleaning fluid in it) over floor. Mops that up.

Finds its way back to charger.
But occasionally gets stuck in same corners or slight change in surface & shuts down.

Thanks for the update Infidel :).
