What are the value clothing brands?

Yd. Has been my go to clothes shop for awhile now and I'd never really thought much about clothes until I came here and every deal has loads of comments bagging on Roger David/Yd / Tarocash etc;

So what are the actually decent brands and places to shop if I can't afford to buy everything from high end retailers/want the convenience of an instore option ?

Don't worry about what others think. Wear what you like, can afford and feel good in!

    • Good advice for social recluses.

Unfortunately, most young Australians have superficial, materialistic and trend following values. If you dress unfashionably, most won't want to be seen with you for fear of being judged as having lower social status themselves.

Adhering to classically moral values without compromise is a lonely proposition.

  • really depends on what you like to wear, while stores like Cotton On might be good for some, it won't be good for others

    • Cotton On has some nice pieces, others are mass market crap. Same story with H&M. Topman and Zara are a little better. TKMaxx is worth a browse.

Factory outlets with designer brands have some decent pieces at value price points, but don't expect to nab anything from this season.

    Lowes

Ignore the anecdotal whining and random opinionated comments.

Just absorb the data and facts and do your own in person research and maybe ask trusted friends that have a good sense of style and quality.

You know which stores to be true but yeah try to check the quality in person unless you prepared to gamble on cheap items.

Kmart, for me they are awesome.

    • Hi AdosHouse, hope you don't mind me asking if the polyester makes you sweat a lot?
I work in the hospitality sector, it's quite labour intensive and I sweat quite a bit so I was put off by cloths containing polyester.

        Depends on the type.

I wear Van Heusen long sleeve business shirts everyday at work, poly-cotton blends and I don't feel uncomfortable in them. I used to wear stuff like T M Lewin, Charles Tywitt, etc, but I am sick of them getting stains, blood, torn/ripped, etc, at work, so I buy shirts I don't care about now.

I like the polyester sweat wicking shirts for the gym, but they are comfortable and you sweat anyway.

But I get Kmart all cotton t-shirts for non work stuff, and I love them. Pure cotton is pretty came comfy and feels nice.

        • Thanks for the really detailed reply AdosHouse :D.
          I'll check out Van Heusen.
Yeah I buy the Kmart's, BigW's and targets cotton t-shirts, $5 a t-shirt an absolute steal and comfy too :).

@Wystri Warrick: They sure are. I get the $5 cotton t-shirts from Kmart, they have lasted years. Though I prefer the slightly heavier $8 Australian Cotton t-shirts from k-mart for colder months. They also feel nicer.

I just wear the Van Heusen business shirts because they are often on sale, and easily obtainable. I get mine from Harris Scarfe when they are on sale.

Yeah depending on OP's needs I like big w, kmart, target, rivers and similar stores.

Everything you need from t shirts, shorts, jeans to hoodies and comfy slip on shoes is there.

My current high end buy only once kinda store pick is g star raw mainly because the style is very urban, hip hop ish.. nice cool style but very expensive like $100+ items minimum.

I just bought 3 white shirts for work for $99 delivered from Charles Tyrwhitt.
I used this link http://www.ctshirts.com/train in incognito mode, thanks to latenight's comment :).

I'm gonna give the shirts and trousers at Kmart a go.
$99 for 3 shirts is quite a lot for me even if they are excellent quality cotton shirts, what putted me of the cheaper cloths is polyester, don't wanna be sweating.

BTW I work in the hospitality sector.

  • Iconic is really good - good decent brands, quality is generally acceptable and if you get in on a good sale, not too pricey either!

    • the iconic is the best thing in aus as far as i can see for trying and buying

i snapped up a pair of trickers for $250 aud with free shipping and free returns. you couldnt get a deal like this for new trickers even at their factory in the UK

For casual clothing like t-shirts and jeans nothing wrong with department stores like Kmart, Target and Big W. For business and formal clothing, generally you get what you pay for. Go for quality over price.

And do some exercise. The better the body shape, the better clothes look regardless of the cost or quality.

      "do some exercise" LOL -

    • +8

The better the body shape, the less time you will be wearing the clothes.

      • You ma'am are a true OzBargain!

The better the body shape, the less time you will be wearing the clothes.

        That's true for several reasons:

        • You'll want to show off your body more.
        • You'll spend more time naked with a friend.
        • You'll grow out of clothes.
        • Most importantly, if you become quite muscular, wearing anything more than shorts and a T-shirt in summer is unbearably hot!
        • Salty fatties down voted lol.

@waterbottled: I dunno why. I wasn't judging anyone. If anything it should just be motivation to get in shape. :)

  • I cant see why a cotton t shirt at kmart costs $10 and a fashion one from gstar costs $100. The $10 one prob costs $2 to manufacture and ship and the $100 one prib costs $4 to manufacture and ship. Assuming the gstar one has better quakity fabric and maybe extra 30 seconds stiching or quality control. Someone is making huge markup

Op Shops such as Vinnies, Salvos, Lifeline.

Second this. Someone else has tested if the clothing fabric wears quickly or slowly, with the workers kindly putting the rubbish clothes into rag bags for you. My op shop clothes have outlasted most others.

  • AScolour

  • +7

I like Uniqlo. Fits the fashion/value/branding I like

  • I wear plain AS Colour tees… they seem alright for ~$15 each.

  • $2 Men's T-Shirts @ Kmart

I have a box with ~20 new tshirts which I will dip in to once my current rotation of tshirts get too ratty to wear (well, I have the "good" for going out tshirts, and then I have the lounge-around-the-house tshirts.)

Target is the best value for money, but I generally prefer the brand name stuff.

Kmart, bigw etc are too cheap and the quality is rubbish.

    • +1

This. You won’t beat Target for value for money. Both quality of material and cut. KMart, Rivers, Big W, etc. are junk in comparison. Sure, the clothing is mainstream and middle of the road, but that’s its market. If you’re a hipster and label conscious, best go shop in boutique shops and pay premium dollar for this season’s trend.

  • Been more of a uniqlo guy. Eversince OzBargain, i started buying more cotton on, TM lewin and sportsdirect stuff lol.

  • Sometimes it's better to buy a good brand, like Sportscraft, Gant and pay a bit more for the styling and quality of the material. They tend to use well-woven natural materials, so the clothes feel good on. The classic cuts don't date, and over time you can build a good wardrobe. I have clothes I've worn for years, which I still get compliments for. If you're on a tight budge, wait for the sales, where you can pick up clothes at 50% off.

I'd say Connor > Yd > Tarocash purely out of my preference for smart casual.

Then there is more casual, where I love Uniqlo > Zara > H&M.

For online retailing, ASOS and Iconic always do well with casual too!

  • In China, poe0ple make LV, Armani likely a washingable jewlry, that true, still exist such sudden-rich idoit-big-spender.

The middel class grade like Mark & Spencer are about the midddle-class-working-uniform. The casual-smnart brand such as Uniqlo get start to be common and ordinary buying behaviours started from less than 10 years ago. It's due to someof the cities started to be over the USD10,000 GDP and people start to welcome any other imported brands more than just the deluxe brandS.

  • Kmart has a good range I used to work at target some of their clothes are good but can be bought cheaper at k-mart in the same complex. I ordered a skirt online and it was $150 supposedly real leather it broke in a week can't remember the seller but never again :( also thrift stores are good your coworkers don't need to know where you bought them from.
I got Tommy hilfiger jeans for like $20 for one of my mates. and a jimmychoo purse for $10 both had tags on them still.

  • That depends on which style your favorite, and do you mean female clothing brand or man's clothing brand? What price do you want?
