  • Let me put this into perspective for 'ya'll'

An average drive to work for myself is technically 25km's. I swap the oil out with decent oil every 10,000km's as cheap insurance. I buy in bulk when it's on special at a cost average of 50% saving on retail price. Even if this means whacking the credit card to the hilt and paying it off at the end of the month.

Right… average price of my oil is say… $30. This means that to drive 1km on oil alone costs me 0.3c (not including filter or mechanic labour)… or about 7.5c to get to work. Now let's work out my fuel usage. My fuel consumption is on average 5l/100 at $1.50. This means I use 1.25l of fuel or $1.88 to get to work. Now… let's work out percentage of oil to fuel cost! Now… my oil consumption cost is 4% vs fuel. Or… a fuel price rise to $1.56 swallows my oil consumption cost.

Basically… buy the absolute best oil you can and don't be a tight arse! Say for example, you drive 30,000kms a year. That means you are paying $90 a year (with oil bought on special). An average motor replacement including labour would run you anywhere from $2000-4000. Or about 4-5% the cost of a low end motor replacement.

How much do we pay for insurance a year on our cars? $550-1100 a year. Or maybe an average of 5% of what our car is worth.

This illustrates the fact that swapping your oil to the good 'expensive' stuff is MECHANICAL INSURANCE! Without a motor your car is not going anywhere! You buy insurance for your car, buy some insurance for your motor!

TL;DR Some idiot doing the sums on buying 'expensive' oil and illustrating how it is cheap insurance to ensure engine longevity.

    • Is this cheap?

      • So so, again, I prefer Helix Ultra (I don't keep an eye on Castrol Edge pricing) but it was cheaper than it's original starting price when it was released

I was trying to illustrate that it is fruitless to concern yourself enough about saving a couple of dollars running cheaper oil (but it pays dividends when you buy good oil cheap)

    • I got a little bit of tears in my eyes seeing your car's fuel consumption is 5L/100, mine is 16L/100.

      • Eh? When I get on the freeway on a good cold night I get 3.2L/100. My Prius V was a stonker at 3.8-4.5L average and that was flatstick doing deliveries.

Am I also correct in assuming you drive a petrol 3.8L Kia Carnival?
