Watching Mobile Apps on TV

We often watch videos, some of which are available via websites and some only, or much more conveniently, available via Android/iPad apps. But phone screens are very small.

What are the best options for watching these on a TV screen at an OzBargain cost?

I don't need support for 4k or whatever the current fanciest option is. I do want something standalone rather than needing to link to a phone if at all possible. Preferably with ability to plug into an ethernet cable as WiFi strength is variable. Definitely needs to be easy to use for family members who are not very technical.

Thanks for your advice.

    chromecast?

  • if you have a smart TV you can download apps that cast directly to TV without extra dongles or attachments..

we have a hisense P7 and have an app on the phone called anyview cast, and the has the same app. run both apps and its a seamless mirroring of your phone on TV screen.

you tube works the same way, as do Netflix and Hulu..

  • Thanks. I've never used a chromecast and can look into that. Are there non-Google options, or just the one device?

Archi, I need to be able to watch apps without needing a smart phone, i.e. I am looking for a device which can run the apps itself. I also should have mentioned that the solution needs to work with a TV which is not a high end smart tv with a full app store.

    Thanks again for your ideas.

then you need a TV box like apple TV or Xiaomi

Dont get the Apple TV or Xiaomi's Mi box. Get the Vodafone TV Box instead.

Or if price is not an issue, get the nVidia Shield TV.

          'like'

          • -1

@Archi: You chose to make two bad suggestions along with your "like". I chose to make two specific and better suggestions.

Thanks for the downvote, I went ahead and did the same for you :)

@0FoxGiven: I made 2 suggestion. 'You' think they are bad

'You' also made 2 specific suggestions that 'You' also think is better

ok whatever mate, not quite living up to your user name, giving more than 0

                @Archi:

                • I "know" my suggestions were better than yours in every way. Do you care to argue how yours could be better?
                • I agree I made specific suggestions and that was my intent. Unlike you, who made specific suggestions and then dangled that "like" out there
                • My first comment was for OP and not you obviously. As he is the one who would need the TV Box. But you took offense for some reason downvoted that comment and tried to justify your poor suggestions.
                • Sorry, to be one of those ppl who didn't live up to their usernames :D

                Don't feed the troll :)

                Buuuurp

  • Thanks, all.

Does the apple tv option have access to apps on Apple's app store for IOS?

Do the other options (Chromecast, mi box, Vodafone, nVidia Shield) have access to apps on the Google Play Store?

  • Just buy a decent size monitor and attach a tv box/ device and you have you TV device ready

  • Maybe I should be more specific. There are lots of apps on the Apple App Store and Google Play, and not so many on the Microsoft Store. For example, the New Scientist app is available from https://itunes.apple.com/app/new-scientist-international-edi… and https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.newscienti…. And similarly for lots of other apps.

Can any of the boxes and devices recommended above download and run these apps natively?

  • Bump

    • This isn't Whirlpool; bumping isn't going to get your thread any notice except for the seven people who subscribed to this thread (myself included).

  • Thanks. Maybe one of the seven can help? What would you suggest? Any advice would be appreciated.

    • More like the seven watching are interested to see what solutions there are. I can't help you as I don't have any. Apart from Chromecast.

  • Hey Op,

I would suggest getting an android TV box over the Apple TV. You got almost all the major apps on both stores anyways. And you can easily sideload unofficial apps on an android tv box. Its much cheaper and if you can spend that much on an Apple TV, you could go for the nVidia Shield TV instead (which is an absolute beast when it comes to tv boxes). The Shield TV runs android btw.

  • are there any (free) windows apps that can do this?

  • Thanks, 0FoxGiven,

Can all Android apps be side loaded to Android TV?

    • Pretty much, but not all of them are made for android tv so they may not be easy to use (the compatible ones should work with no issues). Most likely you would need to pair an air mouse device (If you get the nvidias shield controller then the controller joystick can work as a mouse)

  • I usually watch it through the mobile app tho. If that available in the youtube, there is an option for you to cast on the smart TV. Otherwise, I will use the apknite app Video & TV Cast - Chromecast. It's work well with my Samsung J7. You can try it or look for some that will work with your phone.
