Be careful Momentum Energy upping charges above retail.

So I have been with momentum energy for quite a few years now. their rates were always the best in South Australia where we are slugged substantially more than other states.

Last week I received a letter from them with my new rates for the coming year. They had jumped to some of the most expensive rivaling AGL.

Shocked I wen on line looking for a better deal and who should pop up? Momentum energy!

Their online retail prices are substantially lower than what their "offer" was In fact I could not find similar prices to the "offered" prices an their site.

WTF!

Dropping them like hot potato's

  • Could you possibly be on Standing Offer? Standing Offer tends to be more expensive than contract offer.

  • We have been with Momentum on a contract offer which we have been very happy with. They emailed us to say our rates would be increasing but offered us some 'special established customer' rates that are at least 150% of our old rates. We are unimpressed. We have not seen cheap offers for new customers for Momentum in our search though.

    • I am switching to energylocals they aren't very wide spread though.

Electricity rates vary dramatically depending where you are from.

For instance Momentums "offer" was 39c per KWh, The advertised rate on their site for my postcode was 34c KWh and if I went to a Victorian postcode I could get 17c per Kwh (all GST ex).

Why the (profanity) South Australia is so damned expensive I have no idea.

To add insult to injury the more energy used in Vic the price went down whereas in SA the price per KWh goes up!

      Triple wtf

      • Maybe I listen to liberal media too much, but is it because the last labour government invested in too much renewable energy without thought on dispatchble energy? And ended up paying a premium price to Elon musk to install emergency batteries to ensure SA doesn’t have a repeat of those blackouts?

By the way, I am a strong believer in renewable energy, I just also firmly believe when you ask a company to install something IMMEDIATELY (literally and figuratively) after a blackout they charge more to get it done.

Why the (profanity) South Australia is so damned expensive I have no idea.

No, it's because the Olsen Liberal Government privatised ETSA in 1997. Three out of four people did not want ETSA privatised, the Olsen Government "promised" to not privatise it ikn their election campaign and then they got in and privatised it. Since then estimates are the state is 2 billion dollars worse off than if privatisation hadn't happened making the whole thing a fiasco.

Since then SA prices have risen to the highest anywhere in the world in 2016. Nationally managers employed in the electricity sector increased from 6000 to 19,000 between 2006 and 2012 and productivity dropped over 30% while the rest of the economies productivity surged ahead. The private sector is inefficient and hopeless. "Large broken" is how the ACCC describes it.

And idiots continue to vote for the Labour and Liberal Parties who created this problem against their wishes to start with while they have their wealth removed and business viability is threatened according to the ACCC.

Don't expect anything to change if you vote Labour or Liberal, they both want to remove as much of your money as they possibly can which is why they left the system as it is.

          • @Diji1: All electricity providers in all states are privatised so it doesn't answer the question.

However! You are correct in your condemnation of both parties. why are people so stupid as to not see through that I'll never know.

Now we have a a new regime that is trying to match China for its invasion of our privacy and labor capitulated like meek puppy.

  • I have a spreadsheet comparing all the offers available in SA for different usages.

Flick me a PM with your average daily usage, and your current rates and I'll find a better deal for you.
