A/V Receiver Comparison

I am looking to purchase a 5.1 home theatre system and need an A/V receiver to go with it. The problem is I have no idea regarding the difference between different receivers.

I have a $400 Joyce Maine Gift card so would prefer to purchase the receiver there if possible.

Currently I am looking at 3 options:

https://www.joycemayne.com.au/denon-5-1-channel-4k-ultra-hd-…

Or an entire bundle:

Would anyone be able to tell me which is better or the difference?

Cheers

EDIT: I should mention I have a Sony X9000F with Dolby Vision if that makes any difference

  • By A/B, you mean multi room?

    • Sorry, that was a typo. Should be saying A/V

      • OK. Have you listened to any receivers?

        • I listened to a few in passing but couldn't really tell any difference. One of the reasons was probably because the store was loud and everything else playing as well

          • @Tech5: OK again.
            1. Do you have any speakers at the moment?
            2. What do you want to do with the receiver? Music only or anything on TV
            3. How big is your room?

            • @oscargamer: No speakers except a few logitech PC ones. The goal is purely gaming and movies/TV. I am not an entirely discerning listener, but can tell if something sounds tinny or dead.

The room is a bit harder to describe. The couch is 2.5m in front of the TV. The back wall is another 4m back from the couch. On the right is immediately the side wall. On the left, the side wall is probably 15+ meters away. Basically the TV is in a corner of the room.

              • @Tech5: OK again again.

In your case I would get either of the receivers you have listed. That takes care of the gift card.

I would suggest second hand speakers.

I am a fan of Jensen. I believe they are very good value for money.

The SPX range like this, are older
                https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Jensen-Surround-Speakers/1835305…

                The QX range are newer
                https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Jensen-QX-45-Front-Tower-Stereo-…

Depends where you are. Get a set local to you and LISTEN TO THEM before buying, to make sure they work.

My choice, would be the SPX ones above. Great starter system. I have owned a set of SPX's and they are very very good to listen to.

                • @oscargamer: Okay great, It sounds like general consensus is A/V receivers around that price range are roughly the same, and it is more important what speakers you have. Ill grab the yamaha and look into speakers :) Cheers

    Yamaha - $382 delivered here

Get them to price match :)

    • Will do thanks!

  • In general you are checking to make sure it will deal with 4K content, and the higher audio formats. Then that it will push enough watts (most will).

Base case I tend to suggest Yamaha, but not the base models, a few rungs up. That tends to mean discrete op amp electronics and better quality. Wait for the deals and look for prices that are down to the global price, not the usual Australian overcharging.

    • I will look into them, thank you :) No urgency getting one yet

  • I found importing Yamaha receiver from Hong Kong best value, Mine is still going strong 10+ years later RX-V2500 on a step down converter

  • I bought a cheapie Pioneer VSX-522 that has done me very well for the last 6 or so years (had a friend buy a similar model and it blew up so buyer beware). The reason I need to replace it now though is it doesn't support any of the convenience features properly like HDMI-CEC or ARC or AirPlay 2. Would recommend that you look into if you need these and buy a more expensive model so you don't need to replace it in future.
