This the cheapest this has been by far by over $30+. Excellent price.

    • +4

ya…bought mine for $228 with the Asus controller :(

Good unit. Works fine as Plex server. If you only want to stream stuff, check this one out https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/415277

      • Asus controllers work well?

        • I've asked a few times and never got an answer to whether the Asus controller has a mic built in. I have 2 Shield Tv's currently though the controllers are failing on both and I think 1 is simply dying from daily use for over 4 years. I'd still like a controller next time but I use that mic heavily.

        • It's still BNIB because I want to sell it.

It doesn't have built-in MIC, according to https://www.asus.com/us/Home-Entertainment/Gamepad-TV500BG/s…

  • Thanks. Bought. Hope its the 2017 model.

  • Wow great price!

  • Thank you, great price

  • +2

Bought one even though I will have no use for this little boy for a while.

    • +7

I don't even know what I can do with this and have bought one.

Next question for the gurus is what can you do with this?

I have Plex server running on an N54L that has Xpenology as the OS so what should I put this newest addition to?

      • -3

Exactly, 7 PC ( with i9 and i7 as well), 2 awesome laptops with egpu, many tablets and Ipads and now this one, still bought it, my friends say its an addiction while I believe it is my entitlement to get what I like.

      • +1

Plex already encodes the video so its really a waste of money for you

        • Agree! I have my PCs (2pc set up ) with plex. It will be in the collection like my other 2 receivers (Onkyo). Right now, X Box One X is doing the job.

        • Sorry don't follow. Do you mean Plex encodes the video on the N54L? If you do then the N54 struggles to encode to anything else as the CPU isn't powerful enough.

        • +2

There's no need for Plex to encode anything when the device can play the format. The advantage of using the shield is so you can have a low powered server, like the N54L, and still watch your movies with non-standard encoding.

      • I'm in a similar circumstance, but with the even older and slower N40L, but lately mostly been using streaming on Xbox One for media… But this is so tempting…
I know this is regarded as the best Android TV device, but would it be noticeable better than the $72 Vodaphone TV for the average user?

  • +1

They must have dropped their price mid sale because when I checked about 4 days ago their price was about $220 without the controller so I bought one with an Asus controller for the same price. Now I have one very expensive Asus controller! Summary: this is a great price!

    • Same here, bought the Shield TV without game controller for $210 second hand 2 weeks ago. Spewing that I paid so much then.

    • They dropped a bunch of prices today (last day of coupon sale). Was watching another item which got discounted by a further $40 today.

  • Thanks OP just purchased one. Hope to use it as a Plex server. Will 4K H265 be too much for this to handle?

    • I have the same question, I have a 2011 Mac mini and it can’t handle 4K videos. Would this one play 4K videos without issues?

      • im running the first gen shield tv and it runs 4k youtube videos stutter free. Got a specific video you want me to test?

      • Yes will play 4k with no issues, Atmos and all.

      • Mine handles 4K fine - The biggest bottleneck I’ve always found with the Nvidia shield is the network speed. When it’s hard wired into LAN it’s awesome. Wifi is OK but can sometimes result in buffering, etc

    • I have streamed 4k hdr content through mine just fine. As long as your plex server is able to transcode fast enough and your network can keep up it should work.

  • I only own one TV and already have one of these. This price is so good that I'm tempted to get another one!

  • Thanks OP, purchased!

  • +1

Is there much reason to get one of these if I have a Hisense 4K TV with Netflix/Youtube apps that work fine and I don't use a PC at all?

    • This is widely considered the snappiest, most responsive version of Android TV. It likely to run better than any smart TV,and be better supported in terms of updates.

      • As t3chshopper has said, android tv has its advantages over the built in OS with TVs. I have an LG OLED TV and I find that the network performance alone was enough for me to swap. LG OLED TVs only have 100mbps ethernet, and pretty slow wifi speeds as well, forcing most of my streams to default to SD.

Shield TV has 1000mbps ethernet port and runs android tv. The advantage for me is that android TV has a broader range of supported VPNs, meaning I can bypass region restrictions content much more easily.

        • Thanks for the feedback - I reckon I’ll leave it (not that I have a choice anymore!). I really only watch sport on Foxtel and Netflix, both of which I don’t have any issues with through my current setup. Would just be another thing I have to teach my girlfriend how to switch to 🤦🏻‍♂️

        • you do not need near 100mbps to stream in HD/4k - there's something else going on there, not the fault of the tv

I have the 55" LG oled and it streams 4k fine over wifi. But I do have a very good wifi setup.

          • @gavincato: I'm running a Netgear nighthawk x4s and my downstream is 224mbps for my internet. From a technical perspective the tv should only need a little over 5mbps for a 1080p stream or 25mbps for 4k and the tv is only 3m away so it shouldn't really be a problem, but it still defaults to SD over wifi, and switches back to HD/4k after a few minutes. Phones connect to my router at 867mbps so it's weird.

That being said, I do have the b6 which has a weird CPU compared to the others of that year. We only got HDR game mode late last year.

            • @DangerNoodle: Honestly mate the netgears are real rubbish wifi wise - All my wifi issues dissapeared when I started using proper wifi points (ubiquiti's) and turned the wifi on my nighthawk off :)

I've seen the same outcomes at a stack of places that I've done wifi setups for.

    • If your hisense if currently working fine for you, then no there's no reason to get this.

  • Got one, thanks OP :) My Sony TV is the dumbed down version of Android TV and I think this will be much better for my uses!

    • +1

Even the latest Sony TVs don't hold a flame to the shield!

  • Great price, Thanks OP

  • +1

Thanks. Been waiting to pull the trigger on a shield for a while. Even without the discount code it's still a great price.

  • +2

Great price, still the king IMO.

  • +2

This is a steal. I've own one of these, xbox one s, ps4 pro, chromecast, and still don't know why I bought this one haha. Thanks OP.

    • +1

Ive got a ps4 pro and i prefer to use the shield tv for streaming. ps4 pro uses 100-200w per hour for 1080p streaming, my shield tv uses less than 15w per hour for 4k streaming.

    • I have xbox one s, hows it compare is worth getting this also for 4k media?

  • Sweet baby jesus. That's a bargain. If only I needed another.

If you already have an Android TV built in, I'd recommend getting this anyway. Far superior (powerful) to any in built android system even compared to the current Sony models.

The only reliable option for 4k video.

  • +1

    Wow - amazing price!

  • +1

Gah ive already got 2 of these (2015, and 2017). Dammit at this price, im getting abother as a spare. Seems rude not to.

    • Worth it as a spare? or is it better wait and see the value over coming months?

  • I've got a new Smart TV and a PlayStation 4 connected up, any reason to get this? People keep saying how awesome it is.

  • +1

Got one even though my LG C8 with Web OS has nice apps and is snappy.

Also have a cheap Amlogic 905 running CoreElec for Kodi, which plays 4K HDR x265 beautifully over SMB, so not sure why I bought this :)

Is the controller worth $60? I've got plenty of bluetooth controllers I can use with it.

      • They cost closer to $90 on their own I think so it's reasonable from that stand point.

Curious, do your controllers have mic built in? I find that immensely useful on the Shield TV. Use it mostly in Kodi but also for Youtube etc.

        • I only have Xbox and PS4 controllers, so no. They have a mic input, but doubt it would work. But I'm not a fan of voice control anyway

        • Apparently the remote has a built in mic anyway? Is the difference that the controller has it always on and the remote needs a button press to activate?

          • @chromium: Yes nvidia remotes do. They work brilliantly but both of mine are failing for other reasons, problems with the 1st Gen controllers

  • Is it worth it to upgrade from the older non 4k version, apart from obviously getting 4k capability ?

    • What non 4k version?

      • I meant the first generation device that was launched in 2015

        • That's 4k. It was software updated.

They are identical internally. Minus sd input I believe.

          • @scuderiarmani: Can definitely confirm the first gen supports 4k. The other differences are minor.

            • @DangerNoodle: Ah I see.

So there's really no need to upgrade to this version, unless you want a smaller device?

  • -4

not buying this one …atv and vtv …mi box

    • +4

      Less talky more buyey ;)

    • Shield is better than all of those combined. Unless that's an appletv 4k which is also pretty good.

      • agreed. I've got both a mi box 3 and shield tv. The mi box 3 is a laggy POS compared to the shield.

  • Ok, so I just bought the Vodafone TV from the deal last week and am having massive FOMO seeing this cheap.

What can this do that the VTV can’t?

    • Gaming. Also more responsive.

    • Same fundamentals, but better specs.. 4k output, and a powerful enough CPU to serve media as well as receive it. The better CPU is also valuable for gaming.

  • Brought one.. Was planning to get one from US from Google express but this amazing deal saves few dollars.

  • Has anyone else ever had issues buying from these guys via their ebay store? Earlier this year I bought a security camera from them that I had to return (as an Ebay Plus member) as it wasn't fit for purpose. Wasn't Computer Alliances fault & there was no bad blood between us in our email correspondence. But ever since that transaction, I can't put anything from their store into my shopping cart! It's like they have blacklisted me! And they won't respond to my emails now either. Would really like to purchase another one of these shields from them without having to use my partners account like last time it was on sale….

    • Create a new eBay account.

      • Yeah I suppose I'll have to. Just frustrated by their unprofessional behaviour & taking it personally I guess!

        • I don't think that's a CA issue, sounds like an eBay issue, in this case I'd checkout as guest but also get on live chat and ask them to try and fix the issue for your main!

          • @doweyy: Thanks for that mate. Good suggestion! Didn't even realise I could check out as a guest. I'll get onto eBay about it. Cheers!

        • I think it's likely a CA issue. Some ebay sellers do this when you raise a dispute with them. I was once blacklisted presale because I asked too many questions of the seller.

          • @sinners007: Yep…turns out that was actually the issue! They replied to my email & saw that I had been blocked due to returning an item. Mind you, I returned it due to it being falsely advertised as being Chromecast compatible, something which the Rep said they don't normally block people for.
All seems a bit childish to me. Anyhoo, sorted now.

    • Yes seems to be..

Bing Lee team also had done same for me as i have raised concerns around their communications and shipping.

I had to message them and after that magically i was able to buy from them..

    • I've got a shadow ban from super cheap auto myself ;)

  • +1

Finally bit the bullet and got one with this deal! Thanks!

  • Thanks, bought another one.

  • +1

Wonder if I need this for what? I have a sony smart tv with youtube and flexi(right?) built in. My q is what is this shield tv for?

  • Damn I still haven't opened the one I bought earlier for $220… OzBargain actually makes me lose money LOL

  • Can you play games on this with the controller?

  • My Xbone 4k doesn't work on my old 4k tv. Will this player work/support older 2014-2015 4k tvs ?
Anyone with older 4k tvs experienced this issue?

  • Got one only for the price— is it better than Apple 4K??

    • From what I can gather they perform pretty similarly. It really just comes down to if you prefer iOS or Android.

  • Got one. Good price… Buy first.. Think later

  • +1

Just like a few other folks here, I don't think I need this but I bought it anyway. The curse of being an OzBargain member. :p

Edit: Damn! Sold out already. haha

  • So I am a Chromecast lover, is this anywhere near as convenient?

Eg. use the Plex/Youtube phone apps to control the shield? Will the shield have the ability to turn my TV on automatically and switch to the Shield HDMI input?

About to do some research later today.

My current setup of a HPGen8+CC1 is still working flawlessly (8hrs a day every day with Youtube/Plex playing), hesitant to upgrade give I don't need 4k, especially if convenience takes a hit.

    • Yes this works great with Chromecast. I also find it cuts out 'some' of the adverts when using it to Chromecast from YouTube. The advantage here is you can browse Plex in app on the shield vs having to do it via phone or PC.

  • Bought then saw a thread about the issues with 1080P to 4K res switching and colour space issues. :(

At the moment I use my TV for 4K HDR playback and my old Intel NUC for 1080P, was hoping to combine into one device but now not sure the shield is good enough.

    • What is the issue? Have a link to a video or thread you referred to? Would have been better had you posted this early before we all bought it.

The Gotchas - I was unaware of that ! ….. Eek

        Known issues across various platforms:
No Auto 1080p/4K resolution switching on 99% of Android OS platforms, except the FireTV2 and the NVIDIA Shield(SPMC 17.6 only). Important for >high quality, hands off 1080p > 4K picture upscaling. Manual Android settings fiddling required for optimal picture outputs.
However after auto 1080p / 4K resolution switching, there are colorspace issues with the Shield.
Numerous complaints about poor quality 1080p > 4K upscaling picture outputs from the NVIDIA Shield vs what 4K TV's can do.
Major deinterlacing issues with Android Kodi Krypton and some PVR's - reported on ALL Android devices.
The NVIDIA Shield's Troublesome - overly touch sensitive mini remote.
        Multichannel FLAC - users beware:
Virtually all devices using an Android OS (except the Zidoo X9S) have 16bit Multichannel 48/96kHz PCM Audio output limitations (click)
The No Bullshit NVIDIA Shield FLAC Audio post !!
Read NVIDIA Shield - Multichannel Hi-Res audio limitations for extra information.
Intel Apollo Lake & Kaby Lake NUC's:
No HD Audio Passthrough when using Intel Apollo / Kaby Lake - LibreELEC Kodi Krypton 8.x(click) You will lose Atmos and DTS:X for certain.
However you can use Kodi's 5.1. / 7.1 HD to PCM Lossless Audio decoding instead for no loss in Audio output quality. Mostly Fixed !
No 24bit/192kHz Audio for Sky / Apollo / Kaby Lake Working with Kaby/Coffee Lake NUC's !
No working HDMI CEC control - out of the box on any Intel Platforms.
HDR problems along with various other issues using Intel Kaby Lake Hardware and Kodi.
Amazon FireTV hardware needs Kodi to be installed via sideloading using various means. Kodi does not Autoupdate. There is no Google Playstore >with Amazon's FireOS. Amazon have a blocklist / blacklist of Kodi installer apps in their Firmware to make life difficult.
To access all the 1080p 3D, HDR, and HD Audio features on the Zidoo X9S and Himedia Q5/10 Pro devices, a wrapper must be used with Kodi that >then utilises external media player software. There have been some issues with Subtitles and video playback resume points using this method. >Non tech users may find themselves confused when using this device setup. Detailed self research needs to be done.

        • Doesn't Kodi have their own streaming boxes? I am not sure how a thread on Kodi's website could be unbiased. A lot of sources indicate that this device is one of the top ones in this category. With eBay Plus you can still return it for free and get a refund. Also, if you don't want it I think you can contact the seller and ask them to cancel it since they won't ship it today (they sent me an email a little while ago re the different shipment methods they and if I have a preference etc).
