New PC Gibberish Display. Any Ideas?

Hi all.

Just got a new PC from this deal - Ryzen 5 2600 RX 580 8GB 120GB SSD/1TB 8GB DDR4 Gaming Desktop PC $719.10 Delivered @ TechFast eBay. Plugged it in and the display just shows gibberish twice, then the screen goes black. It looks like the PC is showing the bios screen, then it shows nothing as there's no OS installed.

Have tried connecting to both the discrete graphics card and the motherboard to no avail. Have tried 3 different HDMI cables that work with other devices. Have tried two different displays.

Some light research suggests that the graphics card might be the issue. Possibly bios on the graphics card is corrupted?

Any help would be much appreciated!

If your PC was shipped to your home it might have taken some jostling which caused some components to come loose. The GPU for instance can be quite heavy and is one of the fragile components that can break during transport.

Grab a screw driver, open up the case and take out the RAM DIMMS, the discrete GPU, unplug all the power supply cables leading to the mobo and GPU, drive SATA cables etc. and re-connect them again.

Some motherboards do not have buzzers built in but rather a diagnostics LED panel (either a 7-segment display or some very basic LED indicators) that provide debug codes. These can tell you what's wrong with the system (sometimes).

If it's still a no-go, then chances are you have a faulty component and you'll need to contact the seller to fix the issue.

    • Why is it so hard to remove the power supply cables? The motherboard moves with them

      • There's (usually) a latch that you squeeze then pull it. Sometimes a little force is required.

        • Worked out I had to remove the card first before removing the power

    • If you have a spare graphics card, try using that and see if that solves the issue. I think it might be a GPU problem

      • Unfortunately i don't have a spare. Looks like a DOA to me

    • Ah yeap I had the same issue. Its the gpu. For my build with i3, removing the gpu and using hdmi port on motherboard worked. This method won't work on ryzen coz the cpu don't have intergated gpu.

I sent my system back and I believe they swapped out the gpu. Came back in 3 days fixed.

You need to contact their support via phone. They will arrange pick up for you.

  • Have you tried the DVI port?
Also does the GFX cards fan spin when you boot up?

    • Unfortunately i don't have other types of cables to test

    • They're spinning. Just pulled it out and put it back in. Same issue.

  • It's a biostar 580. I'll try without the card attached

  • Without the graphics card in, connecting directly to the motherboard instead, i get no signal at all

  • Is it a waste of money to try buy a display port cable tomorrow?

    • It likely won't fix the issue, but wouldn't be a waste of money.

  • Why not ask the seller?

Someone had a similar issue with this pc which was fixed by a loose cable iirc

  • Just make sure you don't break anything else while you're tinkering, as warranty might be denied.

    • It's still working. Lights and fans. Just no display

      • Roger that. Yeah wasn't meaning to be rude or anything, just concerned about warranty.

I recently had a friend bring round a home refurb and the ram was slightly out of the slot.

Same symptoms as yours. Have you tried resetting the ram / or removing all the ram except for a single stick?

Edit- actually if you are getting to something that looks like bios, it's not the ram…

I think video card issue as others say above.

        • yea have removed ram and put back in.
graphics card has lights and fans going but still no clear display.

          • @belongsinforums: As you say above. Could be card, could just be the HDMI port on the card, but either way that's a warranty return in my book.

Does the card have dvi? you could use a DVI to HDMI adapter to check if it's the slot.

Although if you don't have extra cables then I guess you might not have adapters….

  • If you've followed the advice above and it still isn't working contact seller for warranty.

  • Thanks guys. Seller is sending me a new graphics card

  • Update. Replaced graphics card. Put the ram back in properly. Just booted into windows. Thank you all

  • Now dota is crashing. Not sure if ram related or just windows being windows

You probably have a motherboard that is very picky with the RAM. Grab the latest BIOS update first for the latest AGESA revision and try again.

If still not working try underclocking the RAM to force it to run stable, and optionally overvolt it by a small degree (1.35v is common). Lowering frequencies cause your CPU to perform a little worse but at least you won't BSOD.

Memory Speed is calculated using the memory multiplier found in the BIOS setting and it's by default a multipler of 100 — so if you want a memory speed of 2133mhz you punch in 21.33, for 2400mhz you punch in 24.00 and so on. When you are testing for stability on Ryzen, you should probably start off with a slower speed and then increase in increments. Try going from 2133 -> 2400 -> 2666 -> 2993 for example.

If you want to get your hands dirty and tweak the timings, you can do that too using the Ryzen DRAM calculator windows application and disable the built in XMP profile.
You'll need to run a utility called Thaiphoon burner to identify the RAM sticks, which can tell you what manufacturer made the DRAM module and what part number it has. After that you can run the calculator app and try to work out the best timings for the memory.

      • Some research told me that because it's just the game crashing and not a bsod, that it might be the windows notifications or game mode causing it. After disabling that it hasn't crashed again…yet
