Portable Projector for Camping

Howdy all,

I've been doing a fair bit of camping recently, and one thing I noticed that we are lacking in our campsite is the ability to watch sports / movies as a group (instead of huddling round a tablet / phones).

I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions on a half-decent portable projector. Ideally one that I could link a bluetooth speaker to if possible (to cut down on wires). If it was a 12v capable that'd be awesome, but not necessary as I intend on getting a 1000w inverter soon anyway.

The alternative at the moment was using a 24" computer monitor with a Chromecast, but this isn't something I'd be overly keen to use as a long term solution.

Budget wise, the cheaper the better, but I'd be happy to splash a few hundred for something that can serve the purpose. I'm not expecting to watch 4k HD or 1080p as I know this requires a hefty budget, but something with passable quality would be great!

TIA

I don't own one (no money) but I would get the nebula capsule or nebula capsule 2 (not out yet) if I could. Reviews seem mostly positive.

    • Looks the goods, but not really wanting to spend upwards of 400+ on it unfortunately.

You're camping. Look at the stars not a screen.

Yep. Doesn't align with my version of camping.

I really hope that OP is camping somewhere really remote, and not near anyone that will be bothered by a projector, bluetooth speakers, etc.

      • 90% of our camping is done in isolated areas, and the other 10% of the time, we can usually hear other people's music playing etc, so hardly an issue, and again, irrelevant to the question being asked.

Me and my friends are big sport fans and given the fact we are usually camping when there are games on, we like to watch them, especially those times where our teams are playing against each other. Sometimes we even plan camping trips around big game events, as we want to get away from the usual scene (pubs / someones house).

Believe it or not, not everyone goes camping to star gaze

Why not camp near a pub??

        • -1

We usually camp on Stradbroke Island, and the nearest pub to our camping area is around a 30 min drive along the beach. After several beers that just wouldn't be an option, which is why I want to try get something portable as an alternative. Not to mention, we bring our own food and drink, so no point going to a pub to spend more money :)

Yeah if you want to watch TV and movies I don't know why you wouldn't just stay at home…

Love having to repeat myself. Not sure why you bother commenting if you're not capable of adding value? Honestly, just because you might not do that when camping, doesn't mean I wouldn't? Not everyone camps to look at stars.

Just be honest, you and your mates go camping to get away from your partners?!

          • -1

@John Kimble: Sometimes! Who doesn't like a boys trip away after all. I also prefer to just get away from suburbia and enjoy the beach, do a bit of fishing and sit by a campfire, but I also still like to watch my team play if I'm out there at the same time, but by the way some of these blokes are carrying on, it seems almost illegal to watch a TV if you're camping. Guess I must of missed that rule in the laws of society terms of service!

So, you camp to do the same things you can do at home, but more uncomfortably? Do you just need to get away from your wife but can't afford a hotel maybe?

@Quantumcat: Are you dense? Honestly, you're coming across as dense. I camp as I like to get out of the house and do things. I don't always like to go to a pub, camping offers variety in life. I'm sorry you like to live your life the exact same every day, and don't like doing anything different (clearly). Honestly, not sure why you're still here, other than to be a bullsh*t troll. Do yourself a favour, go outside and explore the world a little, you might develop a sense of adventure that way, and stop being such a (profanity)

@ChrisMck: No, when you go camping, you must commit to it 100%. You are not allowed to do anything that you can do at home.

              • +1

@John Kimble: Apparently. I guess that means no using a toilet, no eating or drinking beer either, or talking to mates. Jeez, I guess camping is going to be pretty boring from now on, maybe I'll just have to stay home instead

          • @Quantumcat: Can't afford a hotel? Oh man, you really are just a moron aren't you. Money is no issue for me, as previously stated numerous times (obviously you're too thick to understand) sometimes people camp due to the enjoyment of being outdoors, seeing new places etc. You must live a pathetic and boring life if your trolling and points you're trying to make are anything to go off. Seriously, you need to get out more, it's painfully obvious you lack any sense of adventure… Or brain for that matter.

              @ChrisMck:

              enjoyment of being outdoors

              lack any sense of adventure

When I go camping, I have adventures - I go hiking, fishing, swimming in rivers, etc. How can you possibly be enjoying the outdoors by watching TV? You're not having any adventures, you're just doing the exact same things you would at home, only with no heating/cooling, no kitchen, and no comfortable furniture.

If you just want to get away from home and have a boys weekend, why not stay in a hotel? You could do exactly the same things as you're doing when camping, only you can sit on beds and couches in an air-conditioned room, not sit on tarp-covered rocks and sticks, getting eaten by mosquitos and freezing or boiling (depending on the season). The only advantage to camping is that it is cheaper. (Assuming you already own the needed equipment, if not, then it is more expensive.) I fail to comprehend how that can't be obvious.

              • +1

@Quantumcat: Please, tell me how successful fishing or hiking is at 10 PM in the evening? Again, you're only here to troll, so do yourself and me a favour and just stop posting. Cheers

Just search for projectors on aliexpress to see what's most popular, then have a look on ebay for it from australian sellers. Many times it works out cheaper, or not much more than posted from china.

I would steer clear of the cheap projectors.. most of them are cheap for a reason and will not be half as bright as you would expect them to be. These are both worth reading.

I've seen good reviews of the Viewsonic M1.. I'm considering purchasing one at the moment. Can be found for under $500.

The BenQ GS1 would also be a good option. Bit more expensive.. although they were selling refurbished units for less than half price a while ago. I was too slow and missed out.

    • Cheers for that, I'll have a look into it
