Cheapest i can find is around 2k return from sydney. Just wondering if that is likely the cheapest it will be or are there opportunities to get cheaper flights closer to the date?

Yes. Vegas for new years. Dates from the 29th to 7th as long as in vegas for new years and back in sydney by jan 7th.
I was looking at flights on the 31st with hawaiian airlines short stopover on the way over and then a 24 hr stopover on the way back. Assuming we can actually leave the airport haha.
The only thing that might work is there's sometimes cheaper fares on Christmas Day, etc. - for obvious reasons.
Otherwise it's peak period.

@singlemalt72: The problem with those Hawaiian flights is they go via Hong Kong, so take an age.
I'm finding some tolerable options to Los Vegas leaving Boxing Day and coming back as late as possible, Air New Zealand or American Airways (also poss Virgin). 17-20hours flightime. $1700-$2000
If you do end up getting tix - be sure to hit Old Vegas! It's so good! And remember, it will be freezing cold in Vegas at that time of the year.

I meant cheap relative to what the price is right now if i book today.
