$820 for a removal of a bottom wisdom tooth. Thoughts?

Hey guys,

I've been quoted $820 for a removal of a bottom wisdom tooth.

Essentially the surgical removal is $595 and an X-ray of $225.

Can anyone shed some advice as to whether that's expensive for one tooth or should I continue looking?

I don't have health insurance and I'm intending to bite the bullet and save for it instead. I don't wanna waste more money to see other dentists to have them tell me the same price.

Cheers!

    Seems reasonable to me.

In my experience dentists always tell the tooth.

      MSPaint diagram?

      • Surely MSPain would be more appropriate?

  • I had a mate have a few pulled out in Burwood literally doing a walk in, cost him like 400 cash, must not have been complicated. Got mine done public.

    • Was it cheaper for cash?

    • Yeah, I think mine was about 400 ish too + x-ray.

The bottom I haven't done as it needs some fancy 3D scan because the x-ray showed there is a nerve nearby.

    • Got mine done public.

Interested in this part - how do you arrange this, wait time, etc?

      • I wasn't working much at the time so had a health care card, depending on your financial situation you could be eligible. You get assessed at your local health care clinic, then get booked in to a orthodontist with a voucher and depending on the case either done in a chair or the hospital. Because I didn't have to go to hospital it took less than 6 weeks, it depends on demand in your LHD

Try a different place for the xray, I've had 2 and bulked billed through medicare.

  • I'll do it for $20 … Spend the other $800 on whatever you like ;)

  • Can perhaps get the x-ray free through medicare (GP has to issue form for scan required)
$595 seems cheap enough (reasonable) IMO. I have often paid about $300 just for fillings on 1 tooth (multiple/composite fillings). About $3,500 for 1 tooth implant.
Wisdom teeth can be a bxtch to pull and dentists in Aus are amongst the highest paid in the world.
not a dentist, but I have a pair of pliers ;)

  • I had this process done (Fitzroy Dental) with local anaesthesia in the chair and it cost $850 one year ago. This cost is on par.

  • Its definitely in the normal range, dental work aint cheap.

  • $1600 cash for 2 pairs.

  • Price sounds about right.

MS Paint the location of the teeth to make a proper assessment on cost

  • what hurts more, the tooth or the thought of the expenditure?

I went to Bangkok for an upper and a lower (had to be sectioned). Top dental hospital (7 storeys high). Specialists for overall dental, and a dental surgeon did the extraction. Total expense $400 including medication and multiple xrays. Enough said.

what is the process and paperwork involved for non-local/foreigners?

    • Which center was this?

  • 7 storeys high

Makes it 7 times as hard to find the dentist if they screw up!

  • The price is in the right range.

It's hard to compare other quotes because everyone's situation is a little different. Yours might be more complex compared to a lower price that someone else paid, but might be simpler compared to a higher price that someone else paid.

  • check out smile.com.au it might work out cheaper

I had my bottom left wisdom tooth removed just last week. It cost $150 dollars and I only paid a $60 excess on my insurance.

I was given local aneasthetic and was literally in and out within fifteen minutes.

Therefore, to me, $800 sounds like a lot.

  • I did all 4 of mine for roughly $1860, which included general anesthesia at Westmead hospital. Partially covered by private insurance though.

call channel 9, and get on operation Thailand, prolly get it for free, including a holiday, must be on the show though, and get breast enlargement too, 300 cc is my recommendation !

  • Really depends on the complexity; simple cases can be done for around $200 a tooth under local; complex cases such as impacted teeth may cost $700 per tooth and need to be done under GA (and sometimes in hospital unless your dental surgeon does it in their own practice)

  • Mine cost a fortune to get out since I had to go under general. It was about $2k out of pocket using health insurance and it would have been north of $4k all up.

  • I had work done by this Dental Surgeon in Macquarie Street( Implant) Really happy with his work! Only does Implants and Wisdom teeth removal- Very reasonable prices. https://www.drpaulopinho.com.au/wisdom-teeth-removal/costs-f…

  • Seems reasonable to me. I went to see an oral max fac. He charged me $4k for 4 teeth… This is excluding hospital etc.

    All the best x
