Training Muay Thai (Melbourne - CBD)

Hi,

I'm planning on starting Muay Thai ASAP. I've done it in the past but had to stop as I moved for uni and it got busy. Has anyone been training anywhere or know a good value place I can train? I can bring people if that helps the deal. A bit random but any help is appreciated. Thank you

            • @[Deactivated]: pretty consistent 15m when you when the west gate is right there lol and the train is close by too. I miss most traffic

You may find someone who does it in melb. Problem is, when ozbargainers have free time they're on ozbargain.

        • xD facts

          • @ayad: Good luck.

Are there any forums dedicated to mma based in melb? Like car forums.

  • I've been training at Absolute MMA in CBD for almost two years. I mostly do BJJ though but we do have MMA and Muay Thai specific classes, although I've been told the Collingwood location is better for Muay Thai. Highly recommend. Good culture.

  • I would attend a few for two or three sessions. Normally, this is done at a discounted rate or no fee.

Apart from the numerous hacks out there, some groups are either under or over competitive. It's hard to know from a phone call or walk around.

    • yeah exactly that's why i wanted to know if anyone had any info on the atmosphere around certain places

  • They usually give a free trial. I can say that it is all personal preference. There has need places that I thought were pretty decent that some didnt like.
It is hard to tell with 1 free trial but it is better than nothing and you get a free workout.

In the CBD, there is Melbourne Martial Arts (fight club), dynamic muay thai, Prestige boxing, absolute, legends martial arts.

The important thing is not to get hard sold into a contract.

    Hi ayad

Most gyms offer a free trial class. I have tried two gyms in the Melbourne CBD - Absolute MMA and Dynamite Muay Thai.
Based on my personal experience from two trial classes (one in MMA striking and one in BJJ) I found Absolute MMA class sizes quite big (I am a beginner and prefer a more personalised coaching experience) and the price of approx. $50 per week a bit out of my price range nor warranted (IMO) based on the old facilities. However, they do have some quality trainers and is convenient if you work in the city.
Dynamite Muay Thai is more a fighter's gym, however they do welcome beginners. I did about 4 or 5 classes and they definitely do work you hard as you sweat a tonne (ventilation is limited) so if you want to get fit, that could be the place for you.
I have trained a few times with a mate at 8 Blade Warriors Muay Thai in Altona and the guys there are really friendly and is a nice place to train.
The key is to find a place convenient to where you work/live as this will ensure you stick to it. Also, definitely do the trial classes to get a feel for the style of the trainer as well as the people you train with (worst thing is people with ego's wanting to take your head off).
    Good luck!
