Taste of the wild is very good. No fillers or grains. My pup loves the salmon flavor. https://www.petfoodreviews.com.au/dry-dog-food/taste-of-the-…

        • Thanks, I'll give that a go. The difficult thing is I've raised our puppy on Advance all it's life and she's 6 now. Perfectly healthy German Shephard x so I have been reluctant to change but if there is better out there I welcome trying it so I'll give this Taste of the Wild a go thanks! Raw food disrupts her a lot and she's been on dry food all her life.

  • they had a bad rap with one of their products.. though it is actually all they feed guide dogs - and to train a guide dog costs over 100K so i assume they would not feed them rubbish.

    • Its good enough food, but not the best. It has grains which is a cheap filler to bring down the price. Also, guide dogs have a budget for vet visits… if you feed something better than you would have less visits in theory. Or thats my justification anyways. Shes just a pup atm so might go for a cheaper food when she stops growing.

  • Can anyone recommend good pet food, maybe specifically for a Chihuahua? Every Vet tells me something different and I just don't know what's best for the little dude.

Taste of the wild is very good. https://www.petfoodreviews.com.au/dry-dog-food/taste-of-the-… No fillers or grains. My pup loves the salmon flavor. We also give some fatty mince with the kibble once a day. Its not cheap but all the best ones are expensive, however it will last ages (esp with a chihuahua) and you will save money in the long run by not having issues and vet visits.

      • Definitely don't mind paying more for quality. I will give this one a try. Thank you!

Start reading the ingredients on the back.

      You want

      More meat
      Less vegetables
      Less grains

I go for more meat, some veggies and no grains.

      • Good information. Will keep an eye in ingredients. Cheers.

Bit of an essay/lecture here but vegetables aren't needed in a dogs diet but in kibble you need some source of carb as a binder.

If its a high meat product say 15% carb in the form of tapioca its going to be better than 40% carb content from vegetables

Ingredient splitting is pretty rampant at the moment.
If you see pea products 3-4 times in an ingredient list you are probably buying a bag of dog food thats 40% peas

Advance uses too much corn and meat by-products which is why I would avoid them.

          • @thirtysixd: This is the kinda response I needed! I feel hopeless sometimes with so much information out there. Thank you for taking the time to write this up for me.

  • i feed my miniature pinscher Advance. (the small stuff). She doesn't love it.. though no dog really does love dry food. Vet says she is perfectly healthy so must be ok since that is all she has eaten her whole life. (2 years)
