Have you gotten to the step where it says confirm and pay? You will see tax line item where the GST is applied.
I get this every time I purchase something from Aliexpress these days. So does this mean Aliexpress applies GST/Tax only for certain items or is it applied at the seller's discretion now?
Yes, was in confirm and pay and did not see GST anywhere.
If it's over $1000 you will be asked to pay GST by customs when the package arrives.
Huh? Have you been paying attention?
From earlier today… https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/414495
So this is your source? Comments from people in Ozbargain? Don't misinform people with incorrect statements.
@Colombian: And yours is nothing?
@Colombian: Also took me 1 minute to google and prove that I am indeed correct. Automatic collection of GST is only for under $1000.

"For goods with a value over AUD1000, you will need to fill out an Import Declaration, and pay duties, taxes and charges at the border."
@stirlo: Thanks, this is the way you support the community. Your initial post was misleading/incomplete.
By the way, I didn't neg you.
@stirlo: Actually the phone will cost more than AUD$1,000, so if I ask the seller to declare a lower value, then will be GST free?
@stargalaxy: Well now everything makes sense. The seller will only collect GST for low value items (less than $1000) and for anything over $1000 it would be done by the customs when the item arrives into Australia. That is the reason you did not see any GST being charged by Aliexpress. You would get a phone call from Australian Customs wanting their GST Dollars when the phone is here.
BTW you can ask the seller to issue you a fake low value invoice and they may even agree to do so. But if I were you I would not declare this in a public forum since what you are suggesting is Tax Fraud.
@websterp: I am trying to find an excuse not to buy, looks like I need to commit a fraud to avoid the GST and that is a good excuse not to buy. BTW, I was after a Huawei Mate 20X but will wait a few months as it will surely drop to $700-800.
Actually the phone will cost more than AUD$1,000
is this the first time you purchase an over $1000 on aliexpress?
just put through an order and tax is there on the order page screen shot
Mine shows everything similar except no tax line, maybe depend on sellers?
My understanding is that the eCommerce platform provider(in this case AliExpress) charges Jerry's Tax behalf of our Government and they need to be registered with the ATO for this purpose and the individual seller has nothing to do with collecting GST. Even today I've tried adding few different items to my shopping cart and every time I get the tax added at the last step. So if you don't see it, lucky you…Just enjoy the 10% discount as you won't be charged GST by the Customs upon arrival of the item if the declared value is < $1000
