[OzBargain 12th Birthday] Melbourne City Meetup

Like last year, Justin from Poked & Gameology has graciously offered the use of one of their stores in the CBD after they close for a meetup.

Date/time/place: Thursday, November 29 (5:30 again) @ Poked 111 Bourke Street (near Parliament/Bourke St. Mall)

  • I should have t-shirts again albeit they're currently lost in the mail somewhere between Scotty's and my house.
  • Last year we had 40 pizzas & dumplings and that worked out alright. We can do the same this year unless someone has a better idea.
  • I think someone suggested name tags? I can do that. You can write your username, first name, fake name you use for freebies, etc.
  • We had lots of board games/games to play (and also keep). May see if we can do something similar
  • From probably 5:30PM onwards we'll be there. If you want to just grab a t-shirt or say hi and run off, do so.

I won't be attending, I just want to make sure your using a coupon for the pizzas?

    • No, he's stocking up the half price oetker frozen pizz

    • Couldn't find a good Dominos deal that delivered and I wasn't about to carry 40 pizzas from Lonsdale St. Pizza Hut ended up delivering at their regular/cheap price.

      • What pizza choices did/do you have Neil? Any from the Value range (they seem to all be the same price from what I can see).
There were a lot of cheese ones, as nice as they were… Maybe a few of the veg ones (without chilli) would appeal to many (I'm not a vegetarian but it looks good) ;-) Thanks again for hosting this!

        • One you dump cheese over the top vege pizzas taste roughly the same as ones with meat. I'm up for vege pizzas as well, I can pretend it is healthy for me.

        • +1

I got 25 Cheese Lovers and 15 Pepperoni Lovers pizzas last time. I'll add some veggie ones this time.

          • @neil: One lone nutrient crying in the corner.

            Seriously, thanks for doing this.

          • @neil: Mmmm pepperoni! :)

I'll see if I can fly in for this. If so I'll be able to hold a giveaway of a few gadgets.

    • Are you getting the SkyBus from the airport? Any idea how much it costs?

      • +1

I'll actually be at the Sydney meetup unfortunately :P

One way is $17.50 if booked online or $19.50 at the booths. You can take them to Southern Cross station and take a second bus thats included in the fair to bus stops in different places around the city near hotels.

        • Woah, that's expensive! An Uber is only ~$45, so economical with 2+ people.

          • @Scrooge McDuck: The buses also offer free WiFi but yeah not so good if you're with a group.

            • +1

@Clear: You can get public transport from the airport to the city. Unfortunately, it's convoluted to explain if you've never dealt with PT in Melbourne. Basically, you have to get a non-refundable Myki card ($6), top it up ($4.30 for 2 hours x 2= $8.60). Then you take a bus and a train to the city which is a bit over an hour. Makes more sense for people who already have a Myki and are not on time constraints. Anyway, we'll have a train to the airport within the next 10 years..maybe.

              • @neil: I actually used to have Myki when I lived in Melbourne years ago but after using Opal I really don't know how you guys can even cope with such a dysfunctional system. Skybus takes about 20 minutes and is just so much easier for a little bit more.

                • @Clear: I agree. A system hamstrung by a sellout to Transurban. There was a penalty clause on a train to the airport going in. For short trips we are currently driving and parking. If it is less than 5 days it is roughly the same cost as two people for skybus, taxi, Uber etc.

                    @try2bhelpful:

                    That's a myth. :) PTUA.

Or go super tightarse, drop everyone & luggage off at airport, park near Gladstone SC and bus it back to airport.

                    • @neil: There is still a penalty clause for freight but I not for passengers; thanks for link.

I don't know about anyone else but the last thing I would want to do after I step off a plane when coming home is take a public transport bus to pick up the car to go back to the airport and pick up everyone else. There is a limit as to when the inconvenience outweighs the cost involved (yeah, I know I will hand in my Ozbargain badge).

      • You need picking up from Tullamarine?

  • I'm hoping to make this one

  • +3

Can we still get not a bot badge?

  • +1

    Will jv be there?

    • jv doesn't exist

  • woot!

  • Wonder if I'll be able to attend this year…

  • +2

Thanks and, all things equal, I should be there. Thanks for hosting this.

  • I'm keen.

  • Keen as.

  • Yay!! Yes, Iā€™m interested!

  • Can attend but ill be there late (after cricket training). Probably around 8.30, will the event still be on?
Pls keep aside a tshirt and meal for me if possible

    • +1

8:30, ha. I'd say probably not unless someone is organising an after party. :)

  • Interested in attending

  • +1

Print name badge with eneloop logo on it, to show the spirit of true ozb

  • I'm interested and if attending, will be there with my Ozbargain foldable plastic bag! (and gym gear)

  • Interested

  • I'll be there again. But would it be possible to please reserve some T-shirts as last time they went pretty quickly and there are those like myself who finish work later or have to travel to get in to the city.

Also if we could do the same for the food that'd be great, as last time there were only cheese pizzas left.

Having said that appreciate all your hard work and thanks for putting it on again!

    • Let me think about the logistics of it. T-Shirts might be doable but can't really reserve food for people.

What food did you want? I can certainly order more of something else.

  • Interested in attending

  • im interested in coming, however its the day after my birthday and i will still be loaded with all the free food from my bday deals

  • +5

Count me in! I have room for three more in my car, leaving from northern burbs, Mill Park. Or, if desperadoes need picking up from the airport, it's not too far out of the way, to pick up and still head into town! PM me! :) Looking forward to another meet up!

    OK,

We're all good to go for the 29th.

    • Will post a deal tomorrow to get more visibility.
    • I'll vary up the pizza to some veggie ones this time around.
    • Probably go with dumplings again unless there is some food deal on.
    • Drinks will be included this time. Not entirely sure if Poked wants to supply them via the fridge or I'll just grab a couple of slabs from Woolies. Either way, it's free.
    • Free games. We've put in a budget for some board games which we can play and probably give away.
    • T-Shirts will be distributed on a reservation system so I don't get mobbed. Will probably have until 6:30 to pickup reserved t-shirt otherwise it goes into the free market for anyone attending. We're going to prioritise those who haven't received a t-shirt in the past.
    • We should do a group photo which perhaps I'll set a time to do. Voluntary of course.

    Happy to hear other suggestions.

    • may I please request some cider as an alternative to beer.

Also, how may one go about reserving a t-shirt? May I please reserve a men's medium one (I hate lady t-shirts).

If you want I'm happy to scuttle off to Woolies and pick up some blocks of Lindt choccies - they have them for $2.12 per 100g at the moment. Either that or I could wander down and see if the DFO Lindt store is doing one of it's 1 Kg of balls for $25 deals.

        Can't serve alcohol sorry.

Have to think about it. I guess the easiest way might just be via PM and I'll make a spreadsheet of some sorts. In any case, I'll put you down for a shirt.

Thanks for the offer. Just thinking about what people would want to eat at a meetup. Pizza, yes. Drink, yes. Lindt Chocolate? Don't know. Also, wrapped chocs are too easy to snatch a bunch in your bag…not that anyone would do that… :)

        • Sorry saw slabs thought beer. Soft drink a-ok by me thanks. Give me a yell if you want the chocccies. We can always unwrap and breakup.

          Thanks for the t-shirt.

    • How to reserve a shirt, while in attendance?

    • I'd also be keen on reserving a t-shirt please!

  • I'm in!

  • I'm IN!! See you all on Thursday 29th November.

  • I'm in!

  • Just a reminder to check out the deal I posted about the meetup and to PM me your shirt size if you would like a t-shirt.

    • i have pmd you neil but haven't got a reply yet =(

      • I'll PM you sometime on Tuesday/Wednesday to let you know if you've been reserved a shirt. If you haven't you'll be put on standby.

Deadline is 5PM, so I'll be sending them out after that.

        • Thanks Neil.. Looking forward to it =)
