Lenovo ThinkPad E480 - i5 or i7 and a Good Price

Hi.. I am looking to buy a Lenovo laptop E480 256 SSD. I see that there are two models commonly available - one with i5 8250U and another with i7 8550U. Is i5 version good enough or there would be a vast difference in performance between two? What should be a good price for i5 version with 256 SSD? How much should it be cheaper from i7 version ideally?

I will be using it for day to day stuff - browsing with a zillion tabs open in Chrome at a time, Netflix, YouTube, emails, Skype, learning basic programming, etc. No gaming or video editing as such.

I am on budget so don’t want to spend heaps unless the price difference justifies the benefit.

Thanks.

  • What will you be using it for?

    • Sorry, just edited the post above to include that info. Thanks much.

wouldnt the AMD ryzen be better in your use case?

    • Thanks. Can you please share a link of the model you are referring to?

  • I'm more inclined to say go for the AMD version. But that might be vias

Out if those 2 models, I believe the i7's a null buy, as it tends to not be able to be cooled enough to make it worth the extra. But that all depends on the price difference.

    • Why do you suggest AMD version? I am still trying to understand tech, sorry. Which one will be more economical considering no significant impact on performance?

      • Just from what I know AMD chips tend to be better for multitasking, and the ryzen chips have stupidly superior GPUs.

Mind that, I'll leave for someone else because I'm not totally familiar with laptop CPUs.

However, I do believe the ryzen nodels come in cheaper right now, at least on Lenovo's site. Selling for something like $765 for the base model 14" E485 model.

It has been mentioned in this deal. Ryzen 5 with 8GB/256GB & 14" FHD — I think it's a good buy.
