Hitch Hiking Melbourne - Adelaide - Perth

Hi,

I'm planning to go on a journey. Hitch hiking from Melbourne - ADL - Perth. Only problem is I have never done such a thing. How can I educate myself? What do I need to consider? Is this realistically possible? Dangers? Everything far and in between. Has anyone done this before? Do you know someone that has?

Any information to help me get started would be appreciated, thank you.

Look for deals on Jet Star, Tiger Air, Virgin, Grey Hound buses, etc and save yourself the risk.

    Maybe look at this site.

    I wouldn’t do it.

Check out www.rome2rio.com for a variety of different options (ie coach, plane, train) and estimated fares.

For example firefly has a coach service between melb and adl for $65. Though for that price you may get a sale plane ticket.

Was hitchhiking across Australia, got robbed, raped and murdered, what do I do now?

If it was the murdered part does that mean the OP is ghost writing.

What’s the quickest way to Belangalo state forest? Hitch hike

Itd be fine to Adelaide, but i wouldnt be doing it across to Perth. Its extremely vast, somebody only has to take a short detour down a side road, kick you out, and youll probably die because you wont make it back to a road to hitch hike from.

Even if you did do it, and you werent murdered, you'd be stuck for a very long time with people you dont know. Minimum 2 hours per car. And when you stop youll be paying $150 per night in accomodation at a road house. Food is also extremely expensive across the nullarbor. People might also request fuel money from you as its about 40-50c per liter more expensive out there. It might take you a couple of days to get across the nullarbor part.. let alone the rest of it.. so youll essentially end up spending way more money attempting the hitch hike.

    • Yeah Adelaide is pretty doable. But Perth is minimum 3 days away, that's a lot of time to be in other peoples cars. You're better off going on gumtree or down to a backpackers and finding a group making the trip and join them.

      • hmm that could be good. hitch to ADL and take a plan (train?) to perth with people

        • Train is more expensive than a flight.

Trust me, i've done Melbourne to Perth on a motorbike, its a veerrrryyy long way, and there isnt much to see.

If you want to 'see' it, then id suggest driving yourself across, then putting your car on a train back to Adelaide (its fairly cheap, maybe $500?), fly to Radelaide, drive back to Melbourne.

Or alternatively get a 1 way relocation rental.

What do I need to consider?

The possibility of dying of thirst or exposure out in the middle of the desert.

  • OP you have probably given this some thought. What do you see as possible downsides to hitchhiking?

    • well i guess getting the ride in the first place?

      being kicked out?

      kidnapped?

      bad drivers?

  • Sounds like quite an adventure, go for it. You will definitely go out way outside your comfort zone and probably meet some people who you would not normally meet.

Truck drivers will pick people up, they might be a bit rough but most of them are good blokes.

  • I'd vote for 'Don't do it', but the 'lol' at the end makes me want you to do it.. 🤦

  • Can I ask, what is your motivation to hitch-hike? Broke? Instagram blogger? A fantasy that needs fulfilling?
I suspect your physical appearance will affect how well someone will want to accept you.

    • man this is the realest comment. I have definitely thought about my appearance influencing my experience.. especially moving further from the cities. I'm just a uni student about to graduate and just want to go on a journey to see Australia. Learn about the landscapes, myself and really do something you know.

      • Sounds like you wanna do it for the experience rather than about the cost savings. If so, more power to you. I personally couldn't do it, but you know, if you really want to do it, and you are not breaking any laws, why not? Would probably be a good BBQ story for the years to come!
I assume you are extroverted, because I assume the driver who picks you up is in it for long conversation!

        • Yeah definitely would be an experience

fk that xD I'm pretty antisocial and introverted but can switch on people skills coz i've been forced to in my profession. This is actual a big set up coz I don't want to have to talk but seems its a must considering the ride.

          • @ayad: Personally i’d still vote ‘don’t do it’ purely because of the safety concerns. However, if you’re really intent on this plan for the experience & people skills, have a read of “the long hitch home” by Jamie Maslin - he hitch-hiked from Hobart to London and then wrote a book about it. This will give you some idea about what to expect.

  • How can I educate myself?

    Watch the film Wolf Creek

    • how do you quote a comment?

        I'm not sure

          I'm not sure

          ok

  • i'll try not to be too brutal ok, so i apologize in advance if you get offended.

I wouldn't recommend this if you're a woman straight up, unless you can really handle yourself. and by handle yourself i mean serious ass-kicking skills, like you have the ability to fight your way out of a dangerous situation.

it sounds like a wonderful opportunity to gain some amazing life experience, but you could end up just another statistic.

me i travel solo overseas and would try something this silly myself only cause i got some liam neeson 'taken' type skills due to some of my previous roles and positions.

as earlier posters have mentioned here read up about Ivan Milat, watch the movie Wolf Creek.

there are better ways to meet GOOD people and experience the country.

Maybe get a few uni friends together and rent a car and travel that way?

    • i'm not a woman. Relatively strong but no technique training. Just fair share of school fights lol. Man this is all kind of scary now. If only I could carry.

I have a friend that lives on the road and been doing so for about a year now and he seems ok.

      • +1

The real problem is you are OK, until you aren't. The reason your friend might be "OK" is because he is considered the crazy :)

Maybe you need to try before you buy. Have a shot at hitch hiking in a, relatively, safe area and short distance to start with. See if it works for you before you commit to a long way away.

If you want to do something a bit left field maybe consider Fruit Picking. The pay is not great, it is hard work but you are likely to meet a great cross section of people.
