[AMA] I’m a New Zealander Living in Australia, Ask Me Anything

I’ve noticed a few AMA’s lately so I thought why not.

I’m a 21 y/o New Zealander that’s been living in Victoria for the past year, ask me anything

have you ever left your scooter outside the dairy, and if so, what happened afterwards

    • Love it hahahaha

      • What about if it was Hitler

  • are you able to see that all blacks "flat passing" ends up being forward around 20% of the time, or does being from NZ cloud your vision?

      This

The ABs get away with things that other teams don't basically just because they're the ABs

Refs show them too much respect

      • +1

the amount of times i watch a game they're in and the refs just award them the try, and then the next minute the other team scores and they check a bunch of stuff with the video ref.

i think thats what annoyed me the most about how they claimed they were the best team of all time because they had an unbeaten streak of heaps of games, where around 20% of those games they only just won, and there would have been at least 2 or 3 shocking ref calls which won them those games. don't get me wrong, they're a great team, they're just not quite as good as they think they are

    Now i'm seeing:

    • I work at Maccas, AMA
    • I'm 21 moved from SYD to NZ, AMA

    WTF?

    EDIT:

      • I exist, AMA
      • Can you prove it?

To be fair, I only made this thread for Australians that were wanting to ask questions specifically to a New Zealander, maybe about travelling, my experiences or opinions or just general questions about New Zealand that they may not know themselves

Do you say let's go to the local countdown instead of woolies still?

    • Nah surprisingly not. The amount of Aussies that call it Safeway though

      • +3

Probably more likely here in Vic than the rest of Australia. Woolworths bought Safeway in 1985, but Victoria only changed the name in 2008. Anyone over the age of 18 would have grown up calling it Safeway for almost half their lives or longer. And it's hard to change a habit.

      • Only in VIC

  • Why isn't Dave Dobbyn's Slice of Heaven the New Zealand national anthem?

Asking the real questions. I’ll propose it to Jacinda

  • Are you, or will you ever apply for Australian Citizenship? My Wife is a kiwi, and to date i haven't found a reason to go through the hassle or expense.

    • Nah, I won’t be. Living here is only temporary at the moment.

I don’t mind living here and would live here in the future, but don’t think I’d go through the hassle of citizenship. The only issue is I think without citizenship, if you get sick or have a medical emergency and are off work for an extended period of time, you get no government assistance, but I’d try and plan ahead and have savings if such a case arose

      • The only issue is I think without citizenship, if you get sick

Also, not saying this would be you, but if kiwi gets judged as 'bad character' or whatever they call it, they send you home even if been here 20 years. A few bikies have been deported cos of it. I'm not sure what exactly the rules or threshold of how bad crime has to be to get deported back to New Zealand and not allowed to return.
The way some of the bikie laws are, seems like maybe they could just say someone has an 'association' with some criminal, then maybe deport you just for something someone you know did wrong, even if your innocent of any crimes yourself.
Maybe you have to be convicted of some crime, but not sure if it could just be speeding ticket, or blowing over on RBT, or common assault(where you didn't start anything, but were involved in mutual fight) , don't know if these relatively minor offences could get you judged of bad character and sent home these days.
It's quite dangerous to give government such powers. I understand it's fair enough to send someone home for murder or serious crimes though. Just this power has the potential to be abused by authorities and send someone home for no good reason.

        • I thought it was auto-deportation if convicted of a crime which has a 12 month sentance or higher, but the immigration department has discretion to basically do it to anyone

  • Have you seen a drop bear?

  • Are you going to stay in Australia for long term or will be back to New Zealand after a few years?

Ever want to become Australian Citizen?

  • How many Xena, Hercules or LOTR extras do you know?

Can you stop taking our jobs?

    • +1

I suppose if foreigners can come in and “take your jobs” that’s saying more about the locals than it is about the foreigners

      • That foreigners are willing to work for less money in worse conditions and companies will exploit this because all they care about is making more money

  • Do you like Vegemite?

  • Regarding the 'kiwi/Maori swagger' . A few years back, most of my best/close mates were Maori people, just happened to be who I became close to in that area I was living for a while.
Anyways, they explained to me how they could spot another Maori some distance away, not from their looks physically, but from the way they walk. Also from the way they talk too I think, but especially from the walk.
After about 6 months being round Maori's all day every day, I actually realised that without trying, I had somehow picked up the way they walked and talked, in my own mannerisms. Most of time I would be walking with group of Maori fellahs, so I guess having people either side of me walking that way, I naturally picked it up somehow.
It is really relaxed, laid back walk and body language . Also the tonal qualities of how they spoke seems to have a very laid back vibe.
Do you do this kiwi-swagger, really laid back kind of walk ? Also, just wondering if non-maori new zealanders do this type of walk and talk like Maori fellahs do. Maybe they only pick it up when around Maori's all the time, like what happened to me.
Was interesting that despite islanders or other races looking similar, my mates said they can tell just from the walk.. yep, thats a maori there walkin up.
