Looking at flight from Sydney to Detroit, seems cheaper to fly to Honolulu, stay the night then fly to Detroit, is there something im missing. like baggage,

There are amazing deals to LA right now. I'd be checking United via LA.
Usa and Central and south America it’s often cheaper to find the cheapest flight to USA normally LAX, sleep the night at airport hotel then fly with cheapest carrier the next day, just check the different baggage rules for domestic.
You could try thru Canada
Baggage would depend on carriers
