Fridges

Hi folks! I've been a long time lurker, and I thought I'd stick my neck out to ask for help.

I'm in the market for a new fridge. My old one (originally my grandmothers) is dying and I honestly don't know how old it is. Maybe 15 years old, maybe older. Its barely cooling so, yeah, new fridge. Unfortunately, I hadn't prepared for this and I'm going for a six week trip at the end of the year so I can't afford to spend the big bucks.

I don't need it to be large or even medium sized - basically just one step above a bar fridge would do. I'm a little scared of the LGs, having heard so many bad tales about the brand. Ex-demo would be fine by me; however, being single and with a tiny car it would have to be from somewhere that does delivery. I live in Melbourne.

Any ideas? Thanks for your thoughts!

  • LG would be on the low end of product. As fridge is something that you would like to keep for 5+ (or 10+ years) and you don't really mind that it is "out of date", so I think getting a quality brand is actually worth it.

Tried the Second's World (or do they have that in Melbourne)? It basically sells white goods with minor defects. Bought a fridge from them a while ago for a very good price as it only has scratches on paint job on the side panel (which is against the wall and hidden anyway).

  • I think http://www.panasales.com.au/ is the Melbourne equivalent.
I have also heard good things about the Clive Peeters Clearance Centre at the Rear, 168 Maroondah Highway, Ringwood.
Discount Electrical Centre is another option. Watch the post sales support here though, I had to throw away a perfectly good front loader because I broke the door and couldn't get a part. A broom against the door worked until I lost patience one day! But I had the machine for 7 years and it was only ~$300….so still a good bargain at the time and all I could afford.

    • I would also like to add that if you do go to a "normal" white goods store to make your purchase…be wary of the interest free offers. They will not negotiate price if you are going interest free so the item will cost more. Also there is a usually a fixed monthly fee that is usually more that the interest you would pay on a low interest rate credit card.

  • If your old fridge was 15 years old, then one major benefit will be that your power bill should come down,. The new fridges are so much more efficient with power usage.

  • True!

    Thanks for your advice guys.

I notice that Myer has the Samsung SR223NME (223L) for $499. With the 15% discount recently posted and the $100 Myer voucher I recently won that would be $325 or so. I know Myer isn't renowned for its bargains, do you think it would be a good choice?

  • Considering shopbot and others shows it at $499 for cheapest price, that sounds like a good bargain, plus you also save the $100 cash with your voucher. its also Frostfree so that saves lots of time on defrosting.

only issue with Myer is that you'll probably have to wait for 10-15 mins to get served, they have cut back on staff that much!!!

    • I am surprised at that comment ozpete. I have found myer great over the last few months (since Christmas I guess). The staff have been really helpful and going beyond the call. I have given them great feedback every time I shop. I keep saying it is like old Myer, the servie you used to gt when you went there as a child with your Nana. (BTW I don't work or have any involvement with Myer ;) ).

      • Guess it depends on where you are - maybe in Melbourne where the senior management walk around it's ok, but here in Central coast of NSW, the staff numbers are still being reduced and not only have I found the service slow friends say the same thing. That said the prices are more competitive than ColesM, but its NOT the same GB's/Myer here. Maybe Myer Execs from Melbourne need to do private unannounced visits to their interstate stores to understand what's really happening. It's a pity you don't have any involvement because they really need help here.

  • That Samsung actually looks like a good fridge.

It can fit 2 whole watermelons in the crisper. A large bottle of Apple Juice and a six pack of Panna.

The freezer has an ice tray that looks like it can be removed in winter (to store more frozen pies) and a large bottle of water (vodka :-}) can be placed on the door.

The only weird thing is the eggs. It looks very shallow like 2 or 3 eggs deep is all the room your going to get.

  • Thanks for all your help! I ended up getting it from retrovision - same price as myer, $499, but cheaper delivery and they took my old fridge away which is worth another $50 at least. The person I spoke to in Myer (when I could get someone) made a big thing about how it was my responsibility to dispose of my old fridge and, with a toyota echo, I had no idea how that was going to happen! Pretty happy with the fridge, the can/egg tray looks like it can fit at least a dozen eggs… three or four deep times six rows (although I'll probably just use it for cans!)

Note for anyone else looking, Camberwell Electric was $10 cheaper than Retrovision, but Retrovision Frankston took the order over the phone on Thursday and delievered on Saturday morning.

    • I haven't done this myself but a scrap metal merchant would come and get your old fridge and pay you something for it. See www.scrap.org.au. But I agree what you have done sounds like the easiest option. :D Enjoy your cold cans!
