Moving to Eastern Europe - What Do I Need to Do?

I’m planning on moving to Eastern Europe (Romania) for a year or so and I’m not entirely sure what exactly I need to do.

I hold a current Eu passport and Speak the language.
I’m planning on renting there and possibly getting some casual work. I figured because I’ll be entering the country with my Romanian passport and I’ll be getting an identity card (They use this like we use our driving license) that should be fine, am I wrong?
I also might need a bank account that works over there and let’s you transfer funds from Aussie banks without huge fees or a percentage.

I feel like I’m assuming this will be easier then what it actually will be.

Any suggestions/info will be appreciated, what don’t I know or haven’t thought about?

EDT; I haven’t set a date yet, I’m in the planning stage.

Thank you.

  • Regarding health insurance: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Healthcare_in_Romania

I would get the current CBA Gold Card credit card offer ($250 Cashback) with $89.00 yearly fee. This will give you 3 months free travel insurance including medical.

  • Buy a flat. You can get a brand new apartment for about $50k.

  • find the best deal on condoms ever. And stock up, big time

  • +2

Don’t take your wife or girlfriend

  • register yourself with smarttraveller.gov.au. Perhaps consider entering as an aussie, rather than a Romanian. I think if you end up in some trouble, it is harder for the australian government to assist a Romanian, easier to help an Australian. Think how the Saudis treated one of their citizens recently - (I don't know how oppressive the Romanian government is - if it is at all). Make sure you hoon the Transfăgărășan highway before you return, meant to be one of the most epic drives in the world. Watch for sales and get your TRS goods, you've got 60 days before departure. Also look at tax treatments if you are away > 180 days, maybe able to get more tax back. Have a good trip

  • I wish you all the best with the move. I hope you understand what living in a country like Romania means, things are way different than Australia. If you're realistic about it, you have family and friends there that will help and guide you, it will be a great experience. Im from around there, PM me if you've got some specific question I can try and answer!

    • I was born in Romania and I have been back to visit. I’m under no illusions to what it is.
      But thanks :)

  • Don't forget to visit my sister. She actually live in Romania.

  • tell everyone on any social media platform you are

    • Ozbargain is about as social media as I get. So I’ll check that one of the list.

  • there are banks with transaction accounts that doesnt charge atm fees/foreign transaction fees like citibank, ing direct etc so you can use that to use your aud.

id get a local account for your pay to be deposited into while youre working there tho.

  • I would express "social networking", especially in Romania, I am not racist, when ask any west european, they do not have impressiona bout Romania, many scamming, and cheat friends. the social netowrking quality is surely not like in the developed country and their life-credit-mindset also surely not like in Australia.
