Exposed Aggregate Sealer- Which One-Please Recommend

Hello everyone,

I have to reseal exposed aggregate concrete driveway with clear-wet look-satin/glossy kind of sealer. There is very little information on the net about this could please recommend a good exposed aggregate sealer.

My friend suggested Avista -however there are only three reviews on google for it and all three are dreadful!. I have also been looking nutech and crommelin but again there is only so much information on net.

Thanks once again

Given that it is a driveway, the sealer will need a high slip resistance rating therefore anything glossy is out of the picture. I've used crommelin before which are available from bunnings. Just read the container and confirm that it is suitable for concrete driveways and you should be ok.

This is a tricky subject!. I have used the Crommelin concrete sealer on a external patio/deck. I have prepared the surface to 110% prior to application as that is so important. Long story short, have also used this on a concrete driveway and had exactly the same results ….. finish deteriorates under the UV load here in South Australia, in 1-2 years. Starts with initial flaking, in the unshaded areas and then spreads out to the semi-protected areas.

In frustration contacted Crommelin for advice - which was limited!, and suggested it was the "preparation" - the common get out of jail!!.

Contacted an old friend of mine who had many years of coating experience, (industrial / automotive) and he said the only way was to use 2 pak urethane finishes for my application to cope with the UV etc.

So I suggest do some real investigation into your application first, and as "Logical" noted high slip resistance is required, a low sheen is required and there is a range of add in anti-slip powders available.
    Good Luck!.

Reseal or resurface? Avista is a resurfacing product. I was recommended this for our driveway but went to have a look at one & spoke with the owner. The surface started flaking off after about 5 years.

    • Oops, my mistake. Looks like Avista do a resealer as well as a resurfacer.

  • Thanks Guys- to clarify- it is technically a driveway, however, it is at the rear of the property so we don't drive on it at all. It is there, I guess, to enhance the garden surroundings. It appears that it had a wet look kind of sealer so was thinking of something similar.

@bcarp- don't know what the difference there is, all I want to do is, to apply the sealer again- to refresh its look-more than anything else.

    It does seem little tricky!!

Reseal = make it look new. Resurface = brand new surface over the top.

Typically called Glazecoat…recommended every 18mths to 2 years between refurbishment…price in 20l bulk cans (cheapest way) and purchase from any concretors supplier where they buy their reinforcing steel, tools etc…if you front up in proper work clothes you will probably get it at Trade price…first scrub the concrete with a stiff brush and about 1/2 cup of Algaecide ($11 for 2 litres at Coles/Woolworths etc) to a bucket of water, pressure clean and let thoroughly dry before rolling on the Glazecoat with a roller with a long handle….leave the roller in the can and reseal the can until you need again, lasts for years.

    • Thank you, your post is really helpful.I am just not sure as to which companies glaze-coat/sealer should I go for!!

  • Glazecoat is pretty generic…it is purchased in 205l (44 gal.drums) watered down with solvent and sold…you can ask for thick or thin consistency, depending on your application… I used hunderds of litres of it last century…just shop around concretors supplies… stamped concrete supplies etc…the name brands in Bunnings etc are very thin…ie watered down.
