Yay! About time they caught up with 99% of the rest of the consumer electronics market. :D

Yay for consistency, but I don't like the current USB Type-C situation. They basically standardized the form factor, but if you drill down into their capabilities, it's still kind of all over the place. Just charging wise, you have everything from standard slow charging to QC3.0 to USB-PD (which itself has 18W, 30W, 45W, 60W). Data-wise, some are USB 3.0, others are USB 3.1, some are slower, and some have built-in Thunderbolt functionality. AND DON'T GET ME STARTED ON AUDIO-OVER-USB-C. I've bought half a dozen pairs of USB-C earphones now and NONE OF THEM WORK WITH MY PIXEL 2. WHICH HAS ONLY A USB-C PORT FOR AUDIO.

Bloody OnePlus and their Dash Charge

        • +1

Oh yeah I totally forgot about those phone makers which have their own proprietary charging standards.

        • You mean Warp Charge

Manufacturers that are still using QC3 is a real shame as QC4 and QC4+ were both released in 2017 with a lot of current phones being able to utilised both. The advantage of QC4+ is that it's fully backwards compatible with USB-PD 3.0 and USB-IF compliant.

The other issue is that USB-IF decided to scrap the name 'USB 3.0' and replaced it with 'USB 3.1 Gen1' and 'USB 3.1 Gen2'. Making it super confusing as USB 3.1 is being used in place for Gen1 and USB-C by some manufacturers.

Hopefully all the other proprietary charging tech will become USB-PD compliant in future as Qualcomm did with QC4+ and MediaTek did with Pump Express 4.0. However there are still many that aren't compliant including…

        • Meizu Super mCharge (11V/5A)
        • OnePlus Dash Charge (5V/4A)
        • Oppo VOOC Charge (5V/4A)
        • Huawei SuperCharge (4.5V/5A)
        • Samsung Adaptive Fast Charge (9V/1.67A)
        • Motorola TurboPower 2 (12V/2.15A)
        • Generic 9V/2A USB-C Charging
        • 9V/1.67A

          What even is this monstrosity?!

          • @HighAndDry: QC2 chopped in half and restitched together with less bits.

        • Agreed. They also need to come up with a more recognisable name, (possibly the only good thing about Apple Lightning).

Are there any chargers that support the full USB3.1Gen2 / USB-PD standard USB of 100W @ 20V ?
And for that matter any mobile devices that support it ?

I imagine that should be able to charge a phone in seconds and a laptop in minutes, assuming the batteries don't overheat.

Better yet, USB-PD supplies enough juice to standardise power supplies for every small appliance in most homes and offices, and pretty much anything that uses a wall wart (power adapter).

Just gotta see if they bring it their iPhones next year, eh?

    • I suspect it will. They tend to try it on on product then move it across the line after that.

      • +1

The reason they adopted it on the iPad Pro is to allow external accessories. It is unlikely that they will offer the same for the iPhone though. Will see.

I can't help but think they kept it off this year's phones to sell a bunch of them (the XR looks great) and then BAM: USB-C next year to sell a bunch more phones again.

    • I'm surprised they didn't bring it in earlier.

I'm still mourning the loss of headphone ports and SD card slots. I looked at the new MacBook Air and it may be flash, but in my retro mind it's inferior to the 2013 model I am currently typing on, in terms of practicality and the things I use it for regularly.

Apple will probably claim it as their Revolution

  • Should I wait another 12 month before I upgrade from my iPhone 6s+?

      Just upgrade to pixel 3
