Mecool MS8 Pro L 4K 3GB RAM, 32GB ROM Android TV Box US $70.19 (~AU $100.73) Delivered @ GearBest

51

I already have two of these superb android TV boxes - 16GB storage versions, but want a third. This is the 32GB version on special for A$100.44. I suggest that you select the 29c Australia Priority Mail shipping option which is 7-15 business days.

Sign up to pay via the new Google Pay and get US$10 off the final price, in my case the final figure was A$86.38
It took around 30 mins and a refresh for the Google Pay to show in the Gearbest payment options.

No Aussie power supply, but Gearbest will always send the appropriate adapter for Australia. I actually select the power supply for UK over the EU and US options as it makes for a tighter three prong fit.

What type of power supply is it? Probably could pick up an AU one for a few $ from eBay.

    • 5v2a wall wart with option of EU/US or UK prongs. Gearbest will send the adapter needed to fit Australian wall socket. From experience I find the UK gives the best fit as it's three prongs and the EU shaver type prongs is the sloppiest fit in the adapter.

  • "It took around 30 mins and a refresh for the Google Pay to show in the Gearbest payment options."

It takes 30 minutes to see the payment options? Epic fail

    • Yeah you can rest the item in your cart and go back later to complete the payment - promo ends in 5 days.

  • This does not support most of the Dolby 5.1 etc from what I researched. Anyone has them and can confirm?
Review sites say it supports standard audio only…

    • It might not natively, but when I play movies either from internal or external drive via HDMI and ARC to our Denon surround amp they play both DD5.1 and DTS. I guess it depends on the player you use and whether that can decode properly.

    • Haven't had any issues with 5.1 or 7.1 from Dolby or dts.

Only issues I have is with Atmos not working when connected to my soundbar, my receiver doesn't have Atmos so can't check whether it will do Atmos or not.

Plex doesn't work properly on my one (forgot what was wrong), so have been using Kodi.

      • I assume that would be because Plex doesn't allow external video player on Android TV OS (Unlike the regular Android OS) & Plex built-in video player is crap.

I have this device & I too face this issue on some types of files - & this would be common issue for all devices running Android TV OS (incl. MiBox, Nvidia Shield)

The cheaper M8S Pro+ was the most compatible with custom software(LibreELEC etc) for bitstreaming etc, + has DRM for Netflix etc. They have removed the hidden microswitch on the later models, so a hardware hack/temp short is required to get other OS's booting from MicroSD or USB(Apparently there is a software method now too).

  • How does these compare to the Xiaomi?

    • +5

I've had the Xiaomi and eBayed it. The Mecool like the Xiaomi Mi is Android TV OS as opposed to Phone/tablet Android but both types of App can be side-loaded, however I find the Mecool is easier to sideload all apps whereas the Xiaomi can be difficult. To use phone/tablet type apps you will need to use an USB mouse or airmouse remote, do this and the Xiaomi single USB is utilised.

The Mecool has 32GB (and a cheaper 16GB option) onboard storage and 3GB of ram - the Xiaomi only 8GB and 2GB. The Mecool has 2 USB ports and a Micro SD/TF card slot - The xiaomi one USB only. The Mecool has the considerably more powerful processor and graphics chip.

The Xiaomi has a sleeker more sexy case and finish.

The Xiaomi is certified Android TV so can deliver 4K Netflix v 1080p with Mecool.

1080p Netflix on Mecool only after you run the patch and never update Netflix and fingers cross Netflix will not run the Widevine detection procedure again. :)

  • not a bargain.. I bought the 16GB when it was on sale for $40 AUD. There are much cheaper Amlogic S905x and S912 based boxes around.

I kinda agree this is not a bargain (as I paid approx $72 for the 3GB/32GB version with voice remote from an eBay seller) but then again I don't think this post deserves a neg vote.

This price is OK now considering the weak AUD$.

Plus this box runs Android TV OS with voice control remote support. So its not comparable with all these $40 boxes that you mentioned…

For this price range - I would compare it with Xiaomi MiBox and I would prefer MiBox over this due to Xiaomi's better and well optimised OS, then again Hardware wise Mecool is way better than MiBox.

And this one is not wifi only. Which is a major plus for me!

Obviously not a bargain compared to when you bought it and the unit wasn't a proven winner. Then there's our sliding dollar.
      I also bought a 16GB box not at $40 but at $75.

I doubt that we'll see a 32GB unit at much below A$100 unless the US dollar slides, which doesn't look to be on the cards with our interest rates stalled and theirs increasing 2.25% compared to our 1.5%. This time last year our dollar was worth 15% higher and these things are priced in the US currency.

  • I had the mecool m8s pro W and the widevine module became defective after 1 month. But thanks to Gearbest great customer service i was given full refund. Using mibox for the past 1 year and not a single issue with Netflix. Just that it's stuck on Android 6.0 but as long as Netflix works it doesn't matter to me.

These Chinese boxes are great for tinkering (libreelec, coreelec, etc.) But if you want a trouble free Netflix experience get something else (Xiaomi is alright)

Id probably get Apple TV 4k as upgrade when the mibox dies.

    • I am not sure if you are aware, but MeCool has fixed the Widevine module for all Android OS devices (at least working for Netflix HD) with a dodgy patch.

Also Android 8 is now available for Mibox and to me it is much better than the old Android 6.

      • Oreo update removed by Xiaomi.

        • Ohh Really? I wasn't aware of that… luckily we updated ours.

  • Usual PSA that these are not Netflix certified, so they only stream that up to 1080p, but they appear to have some sort of Google certification allowing for 4k YouTube. There's the possibility of certification coming through, but people have been holding their breath for 4 months now.

The S912 is a very good SoC for 4k, so it's a shame we haven't really seen it actually used in devices as most people would happily pay the $90-$100 for it.

    • I expect that full certification isn't possible due to the fact these are sold as rooted devices, so copyrighted material in the wrong hands can be accessed and distributed.

      • By that notion these wouldn't be Google certified, or priced at $100. I think the Shield can be easily rooted as well, so I'm not sure a locked device is an absolute must for Google certification.

Either way, I think it's important that you mention that these are not fully Netflix certified as it's obviously a distinguishing point from other official ATV devices.

Yep while I'll recommend these boxes above dozens of others and I've tried and dispensed with most of them, I'm not intending misleading people so tell it as I know it :)

I have a Nvidia Shield here sitting gathering dust. For what we use them for streaming TV here and overseas, playing movies from an external drive, delivering flac and mp3 digital audio to an external amp and so on, these have proved to be great units. The Shield is great but not for what we want plus you can't control a shield containing a mix of TV and Phone apps with one controller like you can the Mecool with a USB mouse/airmouse.

  • what is the alternate launcher for these android tv..
