Currency Exchange - Bank or Independent Money Changers

Hi all,

I have US $1000. I was thinking about changing them to Australian dollars.

Just wanted to get a recommendation from ozbargainers as to where to get the money changed from? Bank or Travelex etc.?

transferwise.com - best rates I've seen (best conversion rate + lowest conversion fees).

Hsbc (need to be existing HSBC customer) Macquarie centre had a better rate than the shop nearby on the same floor.
My suggestion: ask around at the shops

  At some of the smaller shops you can have success bartering a rate depending on the size of your transfer.

It might be worth specifying whether you've the USD in cash or sitting in a bank account somewhere
