Portable Music Keyboard ?

Hello,
I am planning to gift a Portable Music Keyboard to my brother on his b'day.
Can you please let me know the best place to buy Portable Music Keyboard in Sydney?
I am not sure about the cost either, so appreciate if you can give me some rough figure.

  • Oh lady, that's an extremely general question.

First of all does it really need to be portable? Portable means light and that means less keys and less features.

What level is he? Just a beginner? Then get him a simple one. They will get cheaper with time so don't get more features than he's likely to need in the next couple of years.

There are lots of brands, Casio seems to dominate the lower end, and going up you have others like Yamaha, Roland, etc.

If you can resist the sales talk the best would be to go into a music shop and have a look at the models available and get an idea of how good a model you want. Once you have a model or two, do a price search. Because of the size and weight, shipping may cost so take that into account if you want to shop interstate.

If it doesn't have to be new, you can do a search on eBay, there are heaps of sellers, but you'd have to pick a local seller since most of them are pickup only.

You'll also probably want a stand for it.

  • cool, thanks
I think my max budget is 100AUD.

    What do you say about?

    • My preference is to get a keyboard with a better sound than one with more bells and whistles, which a beginner may not use at all. Established manufacturers like Yahama, Casio and others have more accurate sounding instruments. I think this makes for better sounding music. But really you'd have to listen to some to appreciate the difference.

  • Here are some better ones, plz help in finalizing…

    • As you can see you have your choice of little known manufacturers but larger keyboard (1-4) vs well-known manufacturers but smaller keyboard (5,6).

If your brother is just a kid, then he won't mind 37 keys for a couple of years until he wants something better or gives up music. So I would go for 5 or 6. But that's my opinion because I want realistic sounds.

  • thanks :)

looks like these are 2 better choices….

NEW CASIO ELECTRONIC KEYBOARD CTK496 CTK-496 5 YEAR WTY -150AUD

ohh…lemme ask this….they dont include Batteries/AC adaptor …how much these AC adaptor or battery costs?

    let us know ur comments/suggestions

  • No idea. Batteries you can get anywhere. AC adaptors are fairly generic and a shop should be able to recommend one, given the voltage, power, type and polarity of the plug.

  • Casio 496 or 700 is my choice (61 full-size keys) :)

    My doubts are…
    - does this keyboard has rhythms for hindi songs ?
    - can we play hindi (bollywood song) on this keyboard?
    eg http://www.piano4learners.com/indian/filmy-songs/main-agar-k…

  • You should ask the seller to recommend a suitable AC adaptor. I don't know enough about Indian subcontinent music to say whether the keyboard will be adequate for that.

  • Will your brother play this as a hobby, or will he be taking music lessons? If it's just for a hobby, then most keyboards you listed should suffice.

If he's going to take lessons, I suggest that you get one that produces better sound quality, is sensitive to expression, and has sturdier build. The better known brands (e.g. Yamaha) are likely to meet these requirements. Personally, I would rather get a used better quality one rather than a brand new unit which quite often doesn't come close to what the former is capable of. For example, this seems like a good buy.

    My doubts are…
    - does this keyboard has rhythms for hindi songs ?
    - can we play hindi (bollywood song) on this keyboard?

For the Casio keyboards that you're looking at, most likely not. Entry level keyboards do not normally support recorded accompaniment styles. To replicate the sound of uncommon musical instruments, you'd probably need a synthesizer to do that, which often costs a lot more.
