In-store Bunnings Now Give an Option for Digital Receipt

Apologies if this is general knowledge or been around for a while, but went to Bunnings yesterday, self service checkout and it asks you if you want a digital receipt sent to your mobile number. Once you plug in your number, they send you an SMS with a URL that gives you the option to view the receipt or email it somewhere.

Thought that it was pretty neat…or am I easily impressed?

Any other retailers do this? Apparently JBHifi can email you also?

Checkout still prints out a physical receipt though. Perhaps they will eventually give you an option not to…but probably a good idea to get a printed one too in case the SMS system fails/network issue I suppose.

Officeworks having been emailing receipts for a few years.

It's pretty handy, especially if you end up having to scan physical receipts!

My local Bunnings regularly check receipts at the exit (maybe I look dodgy), so you would still need the printed receipt there.

    • As a fellow dodgy-looking person, I never understood why they would make receipts optional and then have security guards (or, to be more accurate, the "exit lady" at Bunnings) ask to see a receipt. Except for the times I drop and break items in store, I'm happy they have security cameras installed to verify my innocence.

      • The bunnings I work at always reminds the customers that they'll need the receipt to exit and gives it to them regardless.

I find it a little demoralising when I get my receipt checked when I’m doing a small purchase and the checker can clearly see I just came from the check out. I know it’s not personal, but it feels weird regardless!

          • @sahh: I am a regular at 6 Bunnings stores around Metro Adelaide and have never yet seen someones receipt being checked must be an Eastern States thing.

  • last time i was in the US, like 5 years ago, heaps of stores offered this.. no idea why it's only catching on now. Same with gift receipts

I'm gonna guess implementation and operational/maintenance costs were too great until recently?

Plus we are usually behind the rest of the world in most things anyway…

      • Compared to the US? No way, man.

        • +1

Depends what you are talking about I suppose? They are behind in EMV rollout/contactless adoption, but in terms of internet/mobile related things I would assume ahead of us…this post as an example.

Australia is light years ahead of USA in bridge technology. Our small bridge clubs have used computer scoring and dealing machines for years while major tournaments in the US still use hand dealing and give no hand records out after each session. However, they are a lot better at the game than we are (maybe just population)

I felt scammed, it still gave a physical receipt.

It was a trick to get my mobile number for their marketing team.

Also gave the Good Guys my mobile number and started getting marketing messages from them on a weekly basis.

    It's crap.

      STOP

    • Lmao you have *no** idea what you're talking about. There is no marketing attached to digital receipts for Bunnings.

      • +2

        Maybe not right now.

Who is to say that they won't use it in the future for marketing like other retailers have?

        • They do not store the phone numbers, boiky.

          • +1

@ThithLord: JB Hifi and Good Guys certainly do and you get plenty texts weekly on deals and offers. This will be the same. It also helps their data collection and analytics.

You would not be very bright if you don’t think this is a marketing trick.

@Hybroid: Saying that they're going to do it because other companies do it just doesn't make sense, dude.

I don't know if the regular operators of the registers all know the ins and outs of digital receipts, but the ones who do will tell you that the ph#s are not stored. Bunnings, who is constantly lauded as one of Australia's most trustworthy brands, ain't gonna lie to it's customers so they maybe market crap down the line.

              • +2

@ThithLord: I never said that Bunnings are using it for marketing, but there is certainly the potential there for it.

Why ask for my number for a digital receipt and THEN give me a physical one too?
It makes little sense, and anyone that benefits from this is an edge case.

                Keep your panties on.

                • @[Deactivated]: The digital receipt is for retention, my man. You have a digital receipt forever - not so much a physical receipt. Also, for convenience. I do not retain my physical receipts from Bunnings, but I do retain all my digital receipts :)

Bunnings specifically tells the customer (if asked) that they do not retain the customers phone number. If they were actually retaining these phone numbers, that is highly illegal. You think Bunnings would risk their integrity (which they pride themselves in) and being one of Australia's most trusted brands, to provide to third parties for marketing?

                  It ain't happening, man.

                  • +1

@ThithLord: Until one day they change their privacy statement, and start collecting the numbers for marketing purposes.

The problem with someone like Bunnings is that they are practically a monopoly, so while their integrity may be great right now… You don't have much of a choice if they decide to change their position.

So, why still give a physical receipt?
Just give me the digital only.

What Thithlord says is 100% true. Check out the privacy statement if you don’t believe us.

        • Late to the party, but your embarrassing yourself if you think your privacy statement is your defence. I contains numerous references to your details being used to provide info to the third parties and also using third parties to collect more information about you from your phone number.

        • You're living in la la land if you think companies ask for mobile numbers cause they're just nice guys and want to help you out with a receipt you already have a copy of. They need a 'hook' to obtain your personal info, as they can't just ask for it and expect you to give it. The digital receipt is a blatant hook that allows them to collect a unique identifier regarding your identity e.g. a phone number. They then pass it on to third parties who fill in the blanks.

Consumer have been using paper receipts for decades. No one is screaming out for companies to provide digital receipts with personal info.

  • Sign up for a Powerpass (it's free, all you need is an ABN) and all your receipts appear in the portal. You also get some small discounts on products.

  • Anyone tried this feature recently? There used to be an option to download the receipt as PDF, now it's just a link?

  • Bit of a necro, but is there any way to organise the sms receipts Bunnings send you? Would be great if there was an app or some other way to see which sms/link what for what purchases, especially when you're trying to find the receipt for something you bought 5yrs ago because it's broken down inside the warranty!
