Claiming TRS for Overseas Trip

Hi guys, I'm departing Darwin next week and recently I bought a brand new phone from a guy from Melb on eBay. He included the tax invoice from JB Hifi. I know that I can only claim the GST for items I bought directly, but in this case, would it be possible too? And the tax invoice does show the address of the store (in Melb) and the payment details (just like in normal receipt from JB). Will the officer ask about this (like why the store is in a different state)? Should I claim or not? TIA.

Forgot to mention, the price is $950.

  • As long as the invoice date is within the TRS guidelines and depending on the cost, has your name and address on it; it will be fine.

Given OP bought it off a guy who bought it from JB HiFi - and the invoice is the JB HiFi one - I rather suspect it doesn't have OP's name and address on it.

So, OP, sorry but you're goin' be shit out of luck.

I think name and address are only required for over $1000 invoice? Mine is $950.

      • +1

Yes. Name and address are not needed for purchases under $1000. Can confirm this myself

  • I think invoice doesn't need name unless over $1000

How much was the original price of the phone?

If it is more than $1000 you need an invoice with your name and address.

The price on invoice is $950. And there's no name on it.

      • then you would be fine. If there is a different name on the invoice even if it is less than $1000 e.g bought something online then they wont honour it

Ring JB and confirm the receipt is legit before you claim.

  • Will the invoice be within 60 days and no credit card information on it?

Will this be OK? It does show payment detail like in a normal receipt.

      • Hope you're enjoying your Google Pixel 2 XL if that's what you were intending to block out with your pen 😛

No, actually, I tried to block out the IMEI no. :)

Yes, that is fine. Keep in mind technically you can't bring anything else in.

What worries me is that you bought it in Darwin and the bloke bought it from JB Brighton seems dodgy to me.

The TRS officer won't care, the idea is that tourists buy stuff and then claim the gst so it doesn't matter what state the receipt is from.

Thanks. Actually, I bought in on eBay and that guy shipped it from VIC to my place, Darwin. So I don't think it's dodgy :))

  • Do you have to have the original box to be able to claim GST? I want to throw away the iphone and apple watch boxes.

    • No, just the item is needed.

Something else to consider. You can process your claim online before you reach the airport. If you don’t it can take up to or over an hour in the queue to receive the refund. There are two separate lines - one for those who processed their claim online and one for those who only hold the receipts. Note that if you don’t do it online and you are running out of time to board your flight they don’t care - you would have to forgo your GST refund or miss your flight.

    • Thanks, I have done it online. Last time I flew out from Perth airport in the afternoon, there was no one claiming TRS except me. Seems like Sydney and Melbourne are much more crowded then?

      • It can be extremely long queues in both Sydney or Melbourne. However it may be the time of year as well. If you’re flying out around Christmas time it could be very busy.
