    Not very useful. Originally they were used internally but they are simply too small these days so I use them as thumb drives. Not ideal I know but reusing them reduces my share of electronic waste.

Can anyone recommend a good cheap external SSD? I was looking to use it to upgrade an older Mac with a very slow internal drive. 128gb would be fine, but im not sure a thumb drive is up to that task.

  A good cheap external SSD can be made from a good cheap internal SSD and a USB3 - 2.5" drive case which can be had for around $10.
  
  However if your Mac doesn't have a USB3 interface (e.g. prior to 2012) then you will not see much benefit.
