    any melb to HK?

  • +4

(profanity) me that's cheap… if I didn't already have flights booked I'd jump on it

  • Shame it's not during Feb holidays :(

  • What do you guys do in HK? Just curious as I’m thinking of going but not sure what to do there?

    • +1

Shop and eat in my case (not that I've been but I want to!)

Skip HK, take a ferry to Macau and stay at the Galaxy Hotel.

      • You can now take the bus with the bridge open. Apparently cheaper and quicker too.

        • Depends where you're travelling from in HK.
IF you're downtown (Central, HK island) the ferry is still better.

If you're out in the NT, then the bus.

if you like gambling and not drinking then Macau is OK

i found it to be one of the most horrible places i've ever been though :D

        YMMV

(would recommend a day trip or even an overnight, stay in the 'new' area and see all the pretty lights and stuff, and go for a walk around the old town & hill, but we stayed 3 nights and it was way too much…)

        • Agreed - Macau is torture these days

      • HK is wayyyy more interesting than Macau are you serious? Vegas is soooo much better than Macau, and weed is legal in Nevada now.

But yeah HK in itself is not that interesting either, good for eating mostly. I reckon 3 days max. So not really worth flying all that way just to go there.

Shopping; lots of high end shops, lots of cheap markets with great atmosphere, and a xiaomi store
Horse Racing; must go to Happy Valley, Sha Tin is huge too
Sight seeing; Victoria Peak, LKF/SOHO area, Disneyland, Macau
      Gambling; Macau
Eating; again high end down to cheap awesome little joints in side streets and markets
Night life; LKF/SOHO and Wanchai (red light district, but you can avoid the seedy places)

I like to stay around Mid-Levels/SOHO (on the island), but a bit cheaper in Kowloon and plenty of stuff to do and easy to get across on the metro.
Careful if you stay just a little south of SOHO you are on a massive hill and PITA to climb every time you return back to the hotel.

      So yes…plenty there

It is no longer cheap to shop in Hong Kong, it hasn't been cheap for >10 years.
Shopping is reasonable here since there isn't any direct sales tax, but retail rents are so high things get priced accordingly, alot of us living here prefer to order online from overseas where possible.

Eat - plenty of "other" Chinese food, such as Xiao Long Bao from up north, Shanghainese food is fantastic imho
Soy Sauce Western food is kind of fun, this is the Chinese/Western crossover food from Colonial times - kind of American diner meets the East.

Travel - plenty of stuff to see in Hong Kong. It used to be the case that, if in HK you should also do Macau, I would replace Macau with Shenzhen these days however. If you want to see a young, vibrant city (what Hong Kong used to be), go to Shenzhen. Macau has some nice resorts and a bit of history and food, but is overrated IMHO. You will probably need a China visa for Shenzhen (apply in advance, better than Visa On Arrival)

There is no shortage of things to do in HK - just take a look at any of the expat forums and you'll find plenty of tips.

      • For non Chinese speakers it may not be enjoyable experience to be in Shenzen which is on the other side of the border (google translate will not work there, not sure about microsoft translate). For English speakers HK is still a very enjoyable city (English is still a part of the official language though diminishing). A lot of food choices but street food is quite hard to get now.

If you have never been to HK it will be good experience now. It used to be good place to buy cameras and electronics stuff but eBay beats them. And there are a lot of dishonest camera shops waiting to cheat on tourists. Some taxi drivers can be bad too. Sorry that they banned Uber.

        • Will Google Translate work if you've downloaded the Chinese language pack?

          • @dane45: The "trick" is to get a SIM that you can use for "roaming" in China, e.g. a pre-paid one in HK.

That way, you can still access outside services, such as Google.

For translate, yes it will work off-line, but maps won't.

            • +1

@rob2018: @rob2018: Thanks for the tip on offline translate. Just tested the offline Chinese pack and it is a pass when offline.

            • @rob2018: You can download offline maps. Why would that not work?

              • @NoApostrophePlurals: Because Google maps are not always available offline, due to al sorts of legal reasons.

You can't download maps for heaps of places, and China is one of them.

    • +2

plus hiking, different sorts…some up mountains just next to the dense city, or some in "rural" HK.

      • The Xiaomi HK store has a much more limited range vs Shenzhen.

having said that, if you want a Xiaomi mobile phone to use outside of China, then the HK store is the one to use.

  • Thanks. Is it that cheap to shop there?

What food do you recommend besides dim sum?

      • What is there to do in Shenzhen? I have some family in Shenzhen so have been a few times but never knew what do do. Went to the wonders of the world thing and malls like Coco Park but it becomes generic after a while. Am I missing something?

        • Well, if you've been there a few times I guess you've seen the most of it. I'm talking about a day trip or so.

Coco park, MixC Nanshan (big Xiaomi store nearby), OCT (arts and stuff), Huaqiangbei to see where all the bits and pieces for your mobile phones are bought/sold. And, I'd saw the "other" Chinese food (non Cantonese) is much better in SZ than HK.

      • I would say better to do Visa on Arrival for Shenzhen.
It is quick, simple and cheap, compared to getting a Chinese visa in Australia.

        • depends which passport you are carrying …

  • Thanks :) And what months are best to go there? Not too hot or cold :P

    • +1

      Now until April/May

      • Thanks. So christmas holidays is ok. Are their winter similar to Sydney?

        • More like winter in Cairns. Hong Kong Typhoons = Cairns cyclones.

        • Winter is very mild, nothing to worry about.
Cool and dry. Great season to visit HK

  • Ok thanks. I guess from now until April May is not typhoon season in HK?

    • No, typhoon season is August/September

      • ok thanks.

        • While basically correct, there is a threat of a big typhoon heading our way in the next few days.
may or may not happen though

All the typhoon information you need is here https://www.hko.gov.hk/informtc/tcMain.htm

  • Any travel options for a shorter stay? I really just want to pick up some ketamine and get out.

    • Then get a hotel in Mong Kok

    • How much hare you buying? To pay over $400 to go there, you could get enough here for a one week K hole
