Installed SSD Now Laptop Not Shutting Down Correctly

I purchased and installed a Crucial MX500 500GB SSD (an OzBargain deal of course) on my ASUS L550 laptop, and reinstalled Windows 10.

It works beautifully, however won't shut down correctly.

When it shuts down Windows, it completes the sign off and shut down, and the screen goes black, however the power indicator light on the laptop remains on and there is a faint noise like one of the fans is still running. If I leave it and turn off the power cord at the wall, when I start the laptop the next day, the battery is flat.

Any ideas for troubleshooting would be greatly appreciated!

I'm guessing fast start up is enabled. Try this…

hold down the shift key before you click the power icon and select “shut down”

Is your problem similar to the one they have in this video mate?

Basically in that video the problem is that something called "Fast Start" is enabled on their Windows 10 OS, which makes the laptop not fully shutting down when you shut down. The solution is go to disable Fast Start by going to the power setting in Windows 10, just watch the video.

If this doesn't work, then let us know. Cheers

Seems to be a common issue when I googled it. The fast startup seems the most plausible problem if everything else is OK.

As others said I'd go fast start issue, but just in case its not, random question, does it stay on but shuts down correctly once all USB devices are unplugged?

Did you try turning it off and on again?

  • Thank you so much guys, it was the "Fast Start" issue. I thought it would have been something more obscure related to the new SSD hardware.
(In fact I didn't find it made any difference to the startup time so what a stupid feature)
    THANK YOU!!!
