Toyota Corolla SX (2019) Vs Mazda 3 SP25 BN

I am thinking of buying a car but cant decide whether to go for a Toyota Corolla SX (2019) or a Mazda 3 SP25 BN, any advice please?

We have no kids atm. I want travel from home to work (15km one way). Mazda has 5 year unlimited km warranty, corolla has 3 year warranty. I have driven both cars and I am ok with any. But what are the other things I should consider?

Mazda 3 2019 with a design change is coming next year, may want to hold off till then if you can.

    • When is it coming? I can wait for 2-3 months.

    A used car?

    • I am ok with anything which has both reverse camera and navigation.

Any of the recent corollas have them. From memory ascent sport and up have the cameras and navigation.
I would stick to using phone navigation and sensors are helpful too.

Also, Toyota have been really slow in implementing carplay and android auto so those older ones may not be supported and Mazda is meant to be rolling it out.

Previous generation Corolla (ZRE182R) audio can easily be swapped out to something like a Kenwood DDX9018DABS with ACP/AA. DDX918WS is the norm for Toyota but not this Corolla as there is no 200mm fascia available.

Unfortunately not the same can be said about the new gen (ZE1HJ/210 series) as the tablet style audio screen has a single DIN chassis in the lower half of the unit.

          • @PinzVidz: Thanks Phil and Pinz. Is the car play important? sorry I have never used car play before :)

@darshu: Go to a JBs, Autobarn or similar, ask if you can plug your iPhone into an ACP head unit and have a look for yourself, you won't be disappointed.

              • @PinzVidz: thanks. I will check JB HiFi Moorepark. I have seen head units there.

        • That's why I am going for the SX version. It has blind-spot monitor, GPS, Reverse Camera and safety package.

One more question. If I have a reverse camera do I need the parking sensor?

@darshu: Toyota's sat nav is rubbish. With ACP you get to choose whatever nav app you like, Google Maps, Waze, TomTom etc.

            • @PinzVidz: Thanks. I will definitely check.

@darshu: Re: camera, not really, sensors are overkill, but I guess reassuring if you don't feel confident reversing.

Just keep in mind that there is no aftermarket head unit available to suit the new gen Corolla at this time.

            • @PinzVidz: Sat nav in Corolla and Camry is a new unit, done by Tom Tom.

Also free updates for 3yrs so not as bad as it was.

              • @spackbace: Slowly getting better, but still no ACP/AA. Has TMCA/Toyota WA indicated via VNB when they're going to start introducing it?

                • @PinzVidz: Acp/aa?

                  • @spackbace: Apple CarPlay/Android Auto.

                    • @PinzVidz: Ah. Nope, no mention. New models in the states are getting Carplay (not AA for some reason), so would think its a matter of time but no idea tbh.

@spackbace: Wishful thinking here that the 50 series RAV4 will be the first to get both.

@darshu: Safety pack is on every model, they all have the radar cruise etc.

I'd suggest spending the extra $1500 for hybrid though, given your planned length of ownership

    Things to consider:

Are the costs for these two cars comparable?
    Are the insurance costs comparable?
Are the service frequency and costs comparable?

      I agree! this is important!

      Service cost on Corolla:
      Interval - 12m/15,000kms
      $175 capped for first 5

the resell on a corolla is pretty good, how long are you expecting to keep it for?

    • 5-7 years.

I love Toyotas but the new Corolla has a tiny boot size - 217L vs 308L in the Mazda 3 vs 395L in the new i30's (almost double what the Corolla has!). If I was buying a new car right now I would seriously consider an i30.

Not sure what phone you use but if you care about having a car with Apple Carplay you should get an i30, both the Corolla and Mazda miss out on this.

In terms of your poll - what I really vote for is the i30 but since you have only given two choices I choose the Mazda.

Have a read of this: https://www.carsales.com.au/editorial/details/hyundai-i30-v-…

    • +1 to try new i30 as well.

    • I saw this review. In fact, I have been reading reviews and videos for last 3-4 months :) I also thought about the smaller boot size.
